Birth | 3 April 1828 | Peter Harstine was born on 3 April 1828 in Pennsylvania. Peter may actually be the son of Peter Dickert. In any case, he and his brothers who were born before 1830 went by Harstine all their lives. |
Census | 8 June 1860 | He appeared in the household of John Harstine in the census 8 June 1860 at Upper Black Eddy in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as John Harstine, age 85, Potter Hannah " , age 65, cannot read or write Elias " , age 24, Potter, real estate value $600, personal $400 Cornelius " , age 33, Potter Peter " , age 31 Potter Angelina " , age 23 Emily " , age 1 If John was born in 1783, his true age here was 77. If Hannah is really 65 here, her birth year would be 1795. See attached maps of the pottery location on Centre Hill Rd, near Kintner Hill Rd, from 1860 and 2017. |
Marriage | about 1861 | Peter Harstine and Catherine Mills were married about 1861 The Herstine Genealogy website lists only 2 children for Catherine and Peter, Charles M. and Annie. Annie died at the age of four years.1,2 |
Tax List | 1862 | Peter appeared on the tax list of in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1862. with the Description: Harstine, Peter & Brothers, Earthenware Manufactured and Sold, Valuation $195, at 3%, Tax 5.85. John Harstine is listed just below him. Not sure if this referred to the pottery of John, Sr., who had died in 1861, or his son John, Jr. In the 1860 census, Peter, Cornelius and Elias are all listed as potters in the household of John. |
Census | 25 June 1880 | He appeared in the census 25 June 1880 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Birth | 10 May 1783 | John Harstine was born on 10 May 1783 in Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. |
Research Note | 1800 | 1800 1800 Census in Tyrone, Fayette County, PA. There is a John Herstine in the 1800 census in Fayette County, PA, 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15 1 male 45 and over 2 females under 10 2 females 10-15 1 female 20-44 That does not seem to fit for John or his father Johannes, but I just list it here in case it does fit in somehow. He appears there again in 1810. |
Marriage | about 1803 | He and Mary J. were married about 1803 The Herstine Genealogy website lists John's first wife as Mary J., perhaps because there is a gravestone in Saint Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ferndale inscribed "Wife of John Harstine - aged 78 years and 19 days." The Findagrave entry lists birth and death dates of 10 May 1775 and 27 May 1853. Those dates are not now readable on the stone, or perhaps those dates are from a different source. The question I have is, if the Mary J. was the age 55 woman on John's 1830 census, and if she did not die until 1853, why and how did John remarry Hannah Dickert and start having more children in the 1830's? Divorce was almost unheard of in that time and culture. So I need more information than I have at this time. |
Census | 1820 | He appeared in the census 1820 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as: John Herstine, with 1 male under 10 1 male 10-16 1 male 26-45 1 female under 10 1 female 10-16 1 female 45 and older In the occupation columns, there is 1 under persons engaged in Manufacturing. Next door to Peter Dickert and family. Neighbors, Crouse, Trauger, Woolfinger, Raisner, Schick, Riegel |
Research Note | 1820 | 1820 Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Herstine Genealogy Website includes a copy of a list of Poor Children from Nockamixon Township, 1820. The portion of the list in this image shows 8 children 6 - 10, and the list includes two of John Harstine's children, Sarah age 10 and Soloman age 7. John, Jr. would have been age 13, and is not listed on the image shown. |
Tax List | 1828 | John appeared on the tax list of in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1828. Listed as John Herstine, Jr. At this time, his father Johannes was still living, so he might have been referred to as Jr. However, his father lived out his life in Montgomery County as far as I know. But John's son, John Jr, born in 1807, is listed in the back of this same tax list under Single Men. Acres of land: 25 Value per acre: 10 = 250 Acres of land: 38 Value per acre: 1 = 38 Acres of land: 3 Value per acre: 14 = 100 (not sure why 100?) Account of Houses: 1 Value: 30 Account of Cattle: 1 Value: 12 Total Assessment of Valuation: 472 County Tax: 1.18 Glancing at a few surrounding pages, this amount is moderate, there are numerous others with less and others with a good bit more. See attached. Actually I think they added it wrong! They added the $30 for the house and $12 for the cow = $42, and then in totalling it all up they added 30 + 12 + 42! Looks like they had the right number, crossed it out and changed it to the wrong one. Or maybe that $42 represents the third acreage of 3 acres X $14 = $42. Then what is the $100 for? |
Tax List | 1829 | John appeared on the tax list of in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1829. 24 Acres @ $11 per acre 6 Acres @ $ 7 per acre 40 Acres @ $3 per acre 3 Acres @ $12 per acre 2 Houses 2 Cattle Total Valuation $707, Tax 1.41 His son John, Jr. is listed as a single man at the bottom of the page. |
Census | 1830 | He appeared in the census 1830 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as: "John Hartstine", with 1 male 5-9, 1 male 15-19 2 males 20-29 1 male 40-49 (John, if born in 1783, was 47). 1 female 15-19 1 female 50-59 (If this female is Mary J. born in 1775, she would be 55.) Next door is Hannah Dichart with 1 male under 5 2 males 5-9 2 females under 5 1 female 10-14 1 female 30-39 Hannah's birth year should be between 1791 and 1800. So as of 1830, Hannah and John were not yet married, it appears. And it looks as if she were widowed with many young children. If Peter (b. 1828) is this male under 5, it looks as if John may have adopted him, because he grew up with the name Harstine. Further research in any available Nockamixon church records would be needed. Neighbors, Krouse, Woolfinger |
Marriage | after 1830 | He and Hannah were married after 1830 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, based on the fact that Hannah Dickert, widow of Peter Dickert, is listed in the 1830 census, living next to John Harstine. |
Census | 1840 | He appeared in the census 1840 in Tinicum, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as: John Herstine, Sr, with 1 male under 5 2 males 10-14 1 male 15-19 1 male 50-59 1 female under 5 1 female 5-9 1 female 10-14 1 female 20-29 1 female 40-49 Neighbors: Michael Crouse, Jacob Leichliter, William Kohl, Abraham Mills, Peter Casner, J. McEntee Image 13 of 23 |
Census | 3 August 1850 | He appeared in the census 3 August 1850 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as: John (age 67, Potter, value of Real Estate $500, born in Pa.) Hannah (age 50 [hard to read]) Cornelius (age 25) Susanna (age 23) Peter (age 22) Elizabeth (age 18) Elias (age 14) Dan'l Carly (age 24) boatman Image 41/60 This is supposedly John's second wife. If her age is 50, her birth year would be 1800. Findagrave lists a first husband for John, as Mary J, maiden name not given. Her dates are listed as 1775 - 1853. On the Herstine Family Genealogy website, it lists 4 children born to Mary and John, from 1804 - 1813. The first child listed for Hannah and John is Cornelius, born 1826. Since Mary J. was still living until 1853, this is an unusual situation. She is listed in this 1850 census, living with a John Harstine, age 39, a prosperous farmer, his wife Rosanna, and 9 children. Mary J. is 74. They are on image 38/60 for Nockamixon. I wonder if someone has conflated two John Harstines. I have not searched for the church birth, baptism, and marriage records for these folks, so I will just make a note of the situation here. The Herstine Genealogy website lists a child John Jr. born to Mary J. and John, born 1807, who would have been 43 in 1850. Many ages are wrong on the censuses, but this discrepancy just adds questions.1 |
Census | 8 June 1860 | He appeared in the census 8 June 1860 at Upper Black Eddy in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Burial | 3 June 1861 | He was buried on 3 June 1861 at Saint Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ferndale, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.2 |
Tax List | 1862 | John appeared on the tax list of in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1862. with the Description: Earthenware Manufactured and Sold, Valuation $140, at 3%, Tax 4.20 Since John had died the year before, I don't know if the pottery was still being taxed as a going concern, or if this could refer to John, Jr. Peter and Brothers are listed just above him. |

Birth | November 1795 | Hannah was born in November 1795. Based on her death record at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ferndale. |
Marriage | Peter Dickert and she were married, date unknown in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, The only verification of marriage of Peter Dickert and Hannah that I have seen is: 1. Trees list John Harstine marrying Hannah Dickert, so her name was Dickert at time of her marriage to John. 2. In the 1830 census she is listed next to John Harstine as Hannah Dickert, as a head of household, where Peter Dickert had been listed in 1820. However, it seems unlikely that Hannah is the wife shown in the 1810 census with Peter. Peter evidently was married by 1810 and had at least 2 young children, and possibly two 10-15 children. Those may have belonged to another family however. The 10-15 children were born between 1795 and 1800. This would make sense if Peter had been born in 1770. According to Hannah's age at death of 78 years, 7 months and 27 days, in the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Ferndale, church records, she would have been born in 1795, so she could not have been the mother of children who were 10-15 in 1810. (She would have barely been old enough to be the mother of children of any age, although she could have married at 14.) So the wife with Peter in 1810 may have been someone else. | |
Census | 1830 | She appeared in the census 1830 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Hannah is listed as: Hannah Dichart, with 1 male under 5 2 males 5-9 2 females under 5 1 female 10-14 1 female 30-39 Hannah's birth year should be between 1791 and 1800 according to this census. So as of 1830, Hannah and John were not yet married, it appears. And it looks as if she were widowed with many young children. If Peter (b. 1828) is this male under 5, it looks as if John may have adopted him, because he grew up with the name Harstine. Birth | 1770 | Peter Dickert was born in 1770 in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The Zion Lutheran Church, today in Alburtis, has a record of a Johann Peter, born 22 Dec 1770, baptized 14 Apr 1771, to Peter Dickert and his wife Margaretha. If Peter Dickert died between 1828 and 1830, and was born in 1770, that would have put him almost 60 when he died, and still having children. Which could be, especially if he had married a second time. |
Research Note | 1800 | 1800. In the 1800 census, in Pennsylvania, there was a Jacob Dickert in Lancaster, John Dickert, Milford, Bucks County Jacob Dechert, Bethel, Berks County Henry Dechert, Manheim, Berks Michael Dicker, New Hanover, Montgomery County |

Census | 1810 | He appeared in the census 1810 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Peter is listed as: spelled Dickert, with 2 males under 10 1 male 10-15 1 male 45 and over 1 female 10-15 1 female 26-44 This adult female would have a birth year between 1766 and 1784. Therefore, that does not appear to be Hannah. Could Hannah be the female 10-15? I doubt, however, that Hannah is his daughter, because she is listed independently in the 1830 census as a Head of family. It would be unusual for an unmarried daughter to be listed as a head of family at that time. Nockamixon Township stretched from the eastern end of what is now Nockamixon Reservoir, over to the river at Kintnersville, and south along the river past Upper Black Eddy. Ferndale and Durham are in the same area, just back from the river. |

Birth | 11 March 1828 | Mary Cole was born on 11 March 1828. I am confused by this birth date, because the 1860 census shows a Mary Cole age 28, living next to the Harstines, and with a 1 month old child William Herstine. So needs further research.1 |

Marriage | about 1803 | John Harstine and Mary J. were married about 1803 The Herstine Genealogy website lists John's first wife as Mary J., perhaps because there is a gravestone in Saint Lukes Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ferndale inscribed "Wife of John Harstine - aged 78 years and 19 days." The Findagrave entry lists birth and death dates of 10 May 1775 and 27 May 1853. |
