Record not found | Calvin has not been found on the Probate Records, 1789-1996 for Ohio. In the FamilySearch collection, no Herricks or Pratts are returned in the search. | |
Birth | 18 January 1819 | He was born on 18 January 1819 in New York.1 |
Residence | 1833 | As of 1833 Calvin lived in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, based on his membership in the Maumee Valley Pioneers Association, which lists his arrival in the area as 1833, and his place of first settlement as Toledo.2 |
History Note | 1845 | In 1845 in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio, the following event took place: In the History of Toledo and Lucas County, p. 470, there is an interesting discussion of early trade in the area, involving transport on rivers, and later, canals. It discusses the Wabash River, to Logansport, and the Mohawk River, (later replaced by the Erie Canal) used before the canals were built. Transport was by keel boats, and he mentions several captains who ran these early vessels, including one Amos Pratt. Amos Pratt captained a number of boats on the Maumee River from at least 1829 - the mid 1840's. See pp. 438+. He also worked for the Lake Erie Steamboat Line. Amos Pratt is mentioned as a resident of Orleans in 1818 by Mr. Marquis Baldwin who moved to the area. p. 660. In 1838 he was a taxpayer in Waynesfield Twp. p. 923. The Maumee Land and RR Co sold a town lot to him in June 1838. p.934. p. 471, mentions Captain James Pratt "before referred to" but I don't see the prior reference, and John Brownlee formed Pratt & Brownlee (Groceries and Provisions). 1841, until about the time of the completion of the Wabash Canal to Toledo. He relates that about 1845, Maumee, Ohio citizens began some shipbuilding, and one of the captains mentioned was Captain Herrick, Captain of the Propeller Globe. The few hints about Richard Smalley Pratt were that he was involved with the Erie Canal building, that he moved to Logansport for some reason -- possibly connected with canal building. Perhaps there is some connection between some of these facts.3 |

Biography | 1888 | In 1888: CALVIN HERRICK, one of the oldest living Lake Captains in this section, is a son of James S. and Martha (Sharpsteen) Herrick, and was born in Richmond, Ontario County, New York, January 19, 1819. In 1823 his parents came to Ohio and settled at Maumee. Here his father carried on his trade (blacksmithing). Shortly after they moved to Waterville, but while the subject of this sketch was a lad his parents returned to New York, and settled in Livingston County. Here young Herrick remained until 16 years of age, [Note: About 1835.] when he came to Perrysburg, and assisted his brother Elijah in transporting merchandise by team from that place to Providence. In 1837 he commenced his career in Lake navigation, by entering the employ of Captain Curtis Perry, on the Schooner Caroline, with whom he sailed until 1845-the last two years as Mate. In 1845 he was made Captain of the Schooner Kentucky, owned by D. B. Smith of Maumee, a position be held for a year and a half. For two years following he was Mate of the Propeller Globe, commanded by Captain Henry Whitmore. He was the Captain of the Schooner Alvan Bronson ten years. In 1852 he became Captain of the Henry A. Kent, which he successfully commanded until she was destroyed by fire May 18, 1854. Following this date he commanded the Scioto for two years. In 1856 the Marine Insurance Companies along the Lakes formed a Board of Lake Underwriters for mutual protection, and employed men in the different divisions of their territory to inspect Vessels, and report their condition. Mr. Herrick was employed by this Board as Marine Inspector, his district extending from Toledo to Cleveland. This position he held for several years, and subsequently acted in a similar capacity for the Fire and Marine and Toledo Mutual Insurance Companies. For many successive years he was appointed Harbor Master by the City Council, a position he filled most acceptably. Mr. Herrick was married December 3, 1846, with Margaret Van Fleet, daughter of Jared Van Fleet, an early settler in Lucas County. Seven children have been born to them, four of whom are now living, the others having died in infancy. Their living. children, in order of birth, are,: Thomas C., born February 24,1848; Mattie E., born April 17, 1853, now the wife of Elmer Shealds; Clara, born April 16,1860, wife of Charles Beard ; and Anna, born April 6, 1865, wife of John Schweikert. Captain Herrick, as he is familiarly known, retired from active business about ten years since. He is genial in disposition and enjoys the esteem and respect of all who know him. For many years he led a busy and active life in the early River and Lake navigation, and is now enjoying a well-earned repose, surrounded by relatives and friends.6 |

The first meeting of trustees was in 1843, and Solomon Hamilton was acting as chairman. At a meeting of trustees in 1854, Hamilton and Herrick are listed as present. Luther Herrick resigned at that time. (I don't know yet which Solomon Hamilton and which Luther Herrick these were, but the 1846 edition of the Herrick Genealogy, p. 20, lists as 605.7, "Luther, Illinois, 2 sons, 1 daughter." In the 1885 edition, these details are not listed with Luther. hk) |
