Obituary | 17 April 1914 | 17 April 1914, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Daily News Obituary:. See attached for the complete two-column article. Angus MacLeod was a highly respected Newport community member, and held many community positions, which are listed in the obituary. I am excerpting the sections related to his family. "Angus McLeod was born October 24, 1850 in Ross Shire, Island of Lewis, Scotland where his ancestors had lived as early as 1292. He was the second child and the oldest son of Rederick and Anna (MacMillan) McLeod and a grandson of Angus and Catherine (MacKenzie) McLeod. His father was a fisherman and crofter, well read and self educated, and took a prominent part in public affairs being familiarly known as the Pope of Lewis island. He was a friend and staunch supporter of Gladstone and being an able and fluent speaker was frequently sent to London to speak on public matters and took a great interest in the adjudication of the accession of lands in Scotland. The son Angus received his education in the common school, and at the age of 16 became a clerk in a dry goods store in Stornoway and later entered the employ of Kenneth Smith with whom he remained eight years, being promoted to full charge of the store. In 1873, he went to Glasgow and was there but two days when he engaged to come to America as a clerk in the Boston Store in Providence, owned by Callender, MacAuslan & Troup. He remained there four years and in 1877 with Mr. Peter King, a fellow clerk in the Providence store, came to Newport and started the Boston Store of Newport, King and McLeod, proprietors. From a small beginning, this became the largest dry goods establishment in the city. It was first located on the east side of Thames street in the store now occupied by A.P. Jennings. In 1884 it was moved across the street to the present location, the building having been from time to time materially enlarged and better adapted to the growing demands of the business. In 1896, the business was incorporated as the King McLeod Company with Mr. McLeod as treasurer and these business relations continued until the latter's death. .......................For many years he had been a member of the United Congregational Church and had filled many official position in the church............. March 15, 1877 Mr. McLeod married Miss Jessie MacKenzie, daughter of Captain William MacKenzie of Stornaway, Scotland, who died August 16, 1907, at her home in this city. Five children survive: Christine, wife of Edward Gould Chase of Providence, Dr. Norman Murray McLeod formerly of Beverly, Mass. and now located in this city, Hon. William McLeod, a well known lawyer of this city and last year mayor, Roderick McLeod a recent graduate of Williams College and now connected with the King MacLeod Company, and Miss Jessie MacLeod, who lives at home. [Note, the two spellings of McLeod and MacLeod are copied from the article.]1 |
