HAWKINS JR., RETIRED EXECUTIVE, DIES Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - Monday, November 30, 1987 Edgar Marvin Hawkins Jr., a retired utilities executive, died Thursday in Denver. The 79-year-old Petersburg resident was a native of Rochester, N.Y., and a graduate of the Massachussetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Hawkins served in World War II as a lieutenant commander with the Navy Construction Battalion in Alaska and the Pacific. He had a number of jobs in the utilities industry, starting as district superintendent with Virginia Electric and Power Co., now Virginia Power. He was manager of utilities for Danville, became executive vice president of Michigan Gas Utilities Co. and was president from 1973 to 1976 of Southeastern Utilities Co. of Atlanta. Upon his retirement from the industry in 1976, Mr. Hawkins worked as an independent consultant. During his professional career, he was a senior vice president for Stone and Webster Management Consultants. Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Carol Parham Hawkins; a daughter, Miss Carol Ashton Hawkins of Denver; two sons, Val Parham Hawkins of Alexandria and Edgar M. Hawkins III of Darien, Conn.; a brother, Richard P. Hawkins of Hingham, Mass.; and a sister, Mrs. Samuel C. Seelye of Hingham. The funeral will at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Covenant Presbyterian Church in Petersburg. Burial will be in Blandford Cemetery. |

Carol Parham Hawkins, 94, died Oct. 23, 2008, at The Petersburg Ladies Home in her hometown of Petersburg, Va. She took pride in being the first girl born on Westover Avenue in Petersburg. Her parents were I. Val Parham of Petersburg and Lucille Loyd Parham, formerly of Lynchburg. She was a 1937 graduate of Randolph–Macon Woman's College. After her marriage in 1940, she lived with her family in Williamsburg, Va., Danville, Va., Coldwater, Mich., Darien, Conn., and Atlanta, Ga. In retirement, she and her husband moved back to Petersburg 31 years ago. She was a wonderful mother and devoted friend, who managed to maintain friendships acquired in the many places in which she lived over the years. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, a talented floral arranger, and an active contributor to her book clubs. She loved a good story, and entertained many generations of family and friends with her extraordinary good humor and love of interacting with people. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edgar Marvin Hawkins Jr., and her daughter, Carol Aston Hawkins. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille Parham Crane of Litchfield, Conn., and Katherine Parham Price of Jonesboro, Ark.; and her sons, Val Parham Hawkins and his wife, Florence Fox Hawkins of Alexandria, Va., and Edgar Marvin Hawkins III and his wife, Christine Hawkins of Darien, Conn. Five grandchildren also survive her, including Eleanor Hawkins Maguire and her husband, William Patterson Maguire of Washington, D.C.; Val Parham Hawkins Jr. and his wife, Sophie Brown Hawkins of Washington, D.C.; Chance Colbert Hawkins, of San Francisco, Calif.; Andrew Aston Hawkins of Austin, Texas; and Thomas Edgar Hawkins of Alexandria, Va. She also leaves four great-granddaughters. Burial service will be at Blandford Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, followed by a memorial service at The Petersburg Ladies Home at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fellowship Fund of the Petersburg Ladies Home, 311 South Jefferson St., Petersburg, VA 23805. Vera Faver Wyatt December 8, 1946 - April 11, 2013 Vera Faver Wyatt, 66, of Sonoma, Calif., passed away on April 11, 2013 in Austin with her sons Chance and Andrew by her side. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Vera was born Faver Chance Thomason on December 8, 1946, in Bryan, Texas, to William Ewing Thomason and Patience Chance Thomason. She graduated from the Bishop's School in La Jolla in 1965. She attended Briarcliff College and the University of Colorado, receiving a liberal arts degree in Art History in 1969. In the 1970s she lived abroad in England and France before moving with her family to Connecticut. In Connecticut she worked as a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, attended the Yale Forestry School, and raised two sons. In 1997, Vera moved back to Texas to live in Austin. She was a sixth-generation Texan whose family settled areas of Brazos and Burleson counties in the days of the Alamo. She instilled in her sons, both now attorneys, respect for family, heritage, and public service. Her father was an attorney and entrepreneur, as well as a WWII veteran who served as a lieutenant colonel on Gen. Douglas MacArthur's executive staff. Her paternal grandfather was R. Ewing Thomason, an attorney who served as mayor of El Paso, state legislator and speaker of the Texas House, U.S. congressman from El Paso, and federal judge for the Western District of Texas. Her maternal grandfather was George G. Chance, a businessman, rancher, and cotton farmer in the Brazos valley who served as president of the National Cotton Council. In 2004, Vera retired and moved from Austin to Sonoma. While living in Sonoma, she enjoyed volunteering, walking her Weimaraner Amber, traveling, and spending time with her friends and her sons. She had many interests and passions, including art and photography, French culture and cuisine, and great literature and biographies. She loved making new friends and sharing stories, and she always found a way to laugh and learn from life's travails. She will be remembered for her warmth, wit, wisdom, and bravery. Survivors include her sons, Chance Colbert Hawkins of San Diego, Calif., Andrew Aston Hawkins and his wife, Natalie, of Austin; her sister, Abigail Chance Thomason and husband, Tom Sawyer of Lexington. |
