Mrs. Benjamin Essley died at her home in Hesston near noon today as the result of injuries received some time ago. She and her husband were residents of this county in its earlier days but went some years ago to Attica, Kansas, where Mr. Essley died several years ago. Of late she has been living in Hesston where she bought and improved a little home and could be near her children. She is survived by three sons, Benton who lives in Hesston. Frank living two miles west and Fred who lived with her and one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Larimer who lives in Oklahoma. |

Reed was born in Mercer county, Illinois, January 17, 1838; was married to Benjamin Essley July 19, 1857. To this union seven children were born, three of which died in infancy. The family came to Kansas February 22, 1874 and settled in Harvey county. In 1885 they moved to Harper county. Mr. Essley, the husband of the deceased, died September 23, 1902. Grandma, as she was familiarly called, was a member of the M.E. Church for a number of years, but about ten years ago she accepted the faith of "The Evening Light." She was a firm believer in Christ, and died in the faith.
She died May 26, 1905 at the age of 67 years four months and nine days. The children who remain, Frank, Benton and Fred of Hesston, Kansas and Mrs. Minnie Larmer of Lambert, Oklahoma greatly mourn their loss. Funeral services were held at the home of Hesston on Saturday afternoon, May 27, with the Rev. P. C. Herbert of Hesston as officiating minister. The body was taken to Attica, Harper county for interment. |

Benton Essley was born in Mercer County, Illinois, March 16th, 1862, and died in Guthrie, Oklahoma, January 1st, 1923, age 60 years, nine months and fifteen days. In 1874 he came west with his parents and settled in Harvey Co.,Kansas. In 1884 he returned to Illinois and was married to Lenora Bertha Reed, of New Boston, Illinois, and together they returned to Kansas. To this union four children were born, Let & Lela dying in infancy. Ethel died four years ago, and Lee B. now resided at Newton, Kansas. His wife preceded him about four years, leaving only one member of the family, who is the son at Newton. Besided these he leaves six grand children, on sister, Mrs. S. W. Larmer, of Cherokee, Oklahoma; one brother Frank Essley, of Portland Oregon, a number of relatives and friends, many of whom reside in and near Attica. The body was brought to Attica (Kansas) and following a brief funeral service at the cemetery, was lain to rest in the family lot beside his wife and two children at 2:30 on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 3rd. |

Benton Essley, recently of Newton, and for many years a resident of this county, died at the home of his sister, in Cherokee, Okla., Monday, Jan. 1. He had been visiting with his sister for nearly two months. In the message received by relatives here the cause of his death is not stated, but it is thought he died quite suddenly as nothing concerning his illness was known here. He was buried at Attica, Kan., Wednesday.
Mr. Essley came to Newton from Hesston about eight years ago and lived with his son, Lee, until he went to Oklahoma to visit. His son, who was visiting in Oklahoma at the time of his father's death, was notified, and he accompanied the body to Attica.
The deceased is survived by several relatives in Newton besides his son, among them, Mrs. E. R. Hershinger, who was a cousin, and Chester Brainard, who was related by marriage. |

They are the parents of five children, Ed M. of McMinnville; Elmer B. of Livingston, Mont; Frank E. Essley and Mrs. H. A. Smith of Portland, and Mrs. W. N. Brown of Seattle. There are also five grandchildren. |

Funeral services were held in the Sprinker chapel Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. John Weaver of Hesston officiating. Interment was made in the family lot, at Attica, Kans.
Mrs. Essley was born on Jan. 12, 1866 in Mercer County, Illinois, and was married to Benton Essley on Nov. 23, 1884, and to this union four children was born, two dying in infancy and the other two living in Newton, Mr. Lee Essley and Mrs. Brainard.
Her husband, the children mentioned above, four grandchildren, and her mother, Mrs. Mary Reed, four brothers and one sister, all of New Boston, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Fred Lyon of Hesston survive her.
The family lived in Moundridge for many years, moving to Newton a little over a year ago. Funeral wervices were also held at the United Brethren Church in Attica Thursday afternoon by Rev. Robert Adams, assisted by Rev. W. B. McMunn. |
