Obituary | 20 January 2016 | 20 January 2016, Purcellville, Loudoun, Virginia, United States, Obituary:. Born July 4, 1926, the son of the late Dr. Lindley Leggett and Katherine Pearsall Leggett of Westfield, New Jersey. Edgar attended George School in Newtown Pennsylvania, and, following his graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the Navy where he served as a radio technician. After his discharge on June 14, 1946, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1951 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. On campus there he was a member of the Delta Phi fraternity as well as the Glee Club. He worked as a Research Engineer for General Motors in Bristol, Connecticut; for Daystrom Instruments in Archibald, Pennsylvania; and ABC-TV in New York. In the late 70s, he began working as a broadcast engineer for WETA Channel 6 in Arlington, Virginia, retiring in 1991. Michael McCamy, a broadcast engineer for WETA, worked with Edgar for many years, and remembers him fondly. “He was one of a kind, a card carrying engineer who could talk about anything,” says McCamy. “I vividly remember that for years Edgar would host a big summer cook-out at his house in Purcellville. He would get someone with a big meat smoker, and all the station people would bring dishes. During one of the cook-outs, for our entertainment, he brought in an opera singer from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music to sing German lieder. He was a legend.” In 1980, Edgar built his dream house on 10 acres of the Shelburne Glebe in Purcellville Virginia, where he lived after his retirement. Edgar became a very active member of the Goose Creek Quaker Meeting in Lincoln which he joined in 1983. He was especially dedicated to working with the library committee. Writes Goose Creek’s Memorials Committee Co-Clerk Caroline Pelton: “Ed was a deeply cultured man who loved art, opera and books, and was a driving force in the creation of our wonderful library where he was the chief cataloger and frequent donor of beautiful and rare books. Ed was also extraordinarily generous, footing the bill for books for our older First Day School students, annually donating Quaker motto calendars, and paying for subscriptions to Library World. Such a loss for all of us.” In the early 90s, Edgar began a volunteer career with the Blandy Experimental Farm at the University of Virginia in Boyce. There he operated the gift shop where he would greet the public and provide information about the arboretum. “He was such a charming fellow and so interesting. He faithfully volunteered twice a month. We will miss him,” said Blandy volunteer coordinator Kathy Clark. Edgar is survived by his sister, Katharine Leggett Downham of Wilmington, Delaware; his nephews John (Marguerite) Downham of Haddon Township, New Jersey; Thomas (Donna) Downham of Pleasant Hill, California; and Lindley “Lee” H. (Judy) Leggett of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and numerous great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in April at Goose Creek Meeting for family and friends.
