Birth | 2 April 1776 | Lukas Kilpatrick was born on 2 April 1776 in New Jersey. Based on Y-DNA research, it appears that Luke's patrilineal line came from western Scotland, most likely with a few generations in northern Ireland during the era of the Plantations (the 1600's). Many Scots-Irish emigrated to America in the 1700's from the Ulster counties.1 |
Research Note | 1791 | 1791 New Jersey Kilpatrick's listed in military service in New Jersey. Expedition Against the Indians in 1791, Capt. William Piatt's Company, Major Thomas Paterson's Battalion Levies -- Second Regiment Infantry, U.S. Army David Kilpatrick, Private, (Expedition Against the Indians in 1791, Capt. William Piatt's Company, Major Thomas Paterson's Battalion Levies -- Second Regiment Infantry, U.S. Army) Entered Service May 20, 1791 for period of 6 months, no comments (i.e., was not killed, did not desert, did not re-enlist). Capt. William Piatt was from Scotch Plains, Union County, New Jersey, so it is likely his company was recruited from that general area. He died in this expedition, at Fort Recovery, Ohio. Capt William Piatt has a detailed FindaGrave record. It is very possible that the 5 brothers of this Piatt family where ancestors of the Piatt/Pyatts of Phillipsburg and Easton of the late 1800's and early 1900's. (p.8) Lucas Kirkpatrick, Private (Pennsylvania Insurrection of 1791, Brig. Gen. Joseph Bloomfield's Infantry Brigade, Fourth Regiment - Infantry - New Jersey Detached Militia, Middlesex County, Captain Peter Keenon's Company), 26 Sep 1794-24 Dec 1994, period of three months. Although the name was Kirkpatrick, in those days names were much more fluid than today. There was a prominent family of Kirkpatricks originally from Watties Neach, Dumfriesshire, Scotland which immigrated to Mine Brook (near Basking Ridge, Somerset County) in the 1730's, and they are quite well documented. The website of J.P. Kirkpatrick lists 2892 Kirkpatricks, but there are no Luke's or Lucas's. I have spent some time trying to connect our Luke Kilpatrick into that family, but have not found any connection. I spent some time looking up where other privates in Capt. Keenan's company were from. The list includes New Brunswick, Woodbridge, Piscataway, and the Amboys. In Dutcher's Compiled Records of Middlesex County, New Jersey, Militia, 1791-95: page 40, A List of the Piscataway Town Company of Militia Commanded by Captain Moses Martin, 1792, there is a John Kilpatrick. The names are not listed in alphabetical order, so I do not know the significance of the order of the names. However, John Kilpatrick is listed between Samuel Carman and David Dunham. Later in the book there is a list of every able bodied white male citizen between the ages of 18 and 45 within the Township of Piscataway, 1793. On page 111, John Kilpatrick is again listed. He is 21 years old. He is listed next to Phineas Dunham and Samuel Munday. In Captain Peter Kennon's Company of Infantry, 4th Regiment of the Middlesex Militia, 26 Sep 1794, Lucas Kirkpatrick is listed, p. 127. William Kirkpatrick is listed next to Asher Dunham, p. 43, in a 1792 list of Men Signed to Serve in a Company of Light Infantry Raised in Piscataway, commanded by Captain Lewis Dunn. On p. 58, in a Return of the Names of the Men Belonging to the Company of Captain Gulick, North Brunswick, 1792, both John and William Kirkpatrick are listed.2 |

However, Luke, and his widow Sarah after him, lived in Williams Township, so there is some confusion here. Samuel Melick, a family with young children, is listed 8 households further on the page. Also a John Trittenbach is 4 households from Luke.4 |
