Biography

Birth15 January 1839Isaiah Pyatt was born on 15 January 1839 in Pennsylvania. Birth listed in Fackenthal's "Soldiers of the Civil War" as 1849, but birth as calculated from obituary and censuses indicates 1839. A birth of 1849 would have made him age 13 when he joined the Civil War which would be unlikely.1
Census3 August 1860He appeared in the census 3 August 1860 in Greenwich Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Isaiah is listed as: Farm Laborer, age 22, in the household of Philip G. Fine, age 39, Farmer worth $1600, and family, living next to Elizabeth Fine, age 60, only person in her household, estate $5000. This entry is indexed Josiah, and it does look like Josiah, so this may not be Isaiah, but since he later lives in Greenwich Twp, and is no longer with his parents, and I don't see a Josiah Piatt in any other census year, this is a good candidate for Isaiah.2
Marriage10 August 1861He and Amanda Livengood were married on 10 August 1861 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, The New Jersey Marriage Records 1670-1965 database on Ancestry with images from FamilySearch shows their marriage, see attached certification. Married by Aaron H. Stoves, Justice of the Peace.

In addition to the 8 children I have in my database, I have also seen an Elizabeth Piatt, b. 21 Jan 1883, Bucks County, in some trees.
Military3 September 1862He served in the military on 3 September 1862 in Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, in the Civil War in Company F, 31st Regiment of New Jersey Infantry, organized at Flemington, N.J., and mustered in September 17, 1862. Left New Jersey for Washington, D.C., September 26, 1862. Attached to Abercrombie's Provisional Brigade, Casey's Division, Defenses of Washington, to December, 1862. Patrick's Command, Provost Guard, Army of the Potomac, to January, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 1st Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, to June, 1863.

SERVICE.--Duty in the defenses of Washington until November, 1862. Moved to Aquia Creek, Va., and duty there guarding railroad until January, 1863. His brothers Jacob H. and William N. also served with him in this company on these dates.
Military24 June 1863He served in the military on 24 June 1863 in New Jersey
Census1 July 1870He appeared in the census 1 July 1870 at Bridgeton in Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Isaiah is listed as: age 30, Occupation: Boating on Canal, personal estate $200, born in Penna., with Amanda, age 24, keeping house; William, age 4 and David, age 1, all born in Penna. Neighbors Anna Fisher, Aaron Oberbeck, Bernard Sadler.3
Census1 June 1880He appeared in the census 1 June 1880 in Greenwich Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Isaiah is listed as: age 41, Huckster. With Mandy, wife, age 33, Keeping House; son William, age 13; son Jacob, age 11; son Joseph, age 9; daughter Ida M., age 5; son John, age 3. John, Ida and William born in New Jersey, the others in Pa. Many other Pyatt's nearby, including Henry G., Thomas, Aaron and his brother Washington, Joseph G, Phillip, and Jacob H.1
Widow28 July 1889At age, Isaiah Pyatt was widowed by the death of Amanda Livengood on 28 July 1889.4
Census1890He appeared in the census 1890 at 35 Franklin, South Side, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Isaiah is listed as: junk dealer.
Census1890Isaiah appeared on the Special Veterans census of in 1890 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This documents his regiment and dates of service and shows that he was still living at that time.5
Pensn App Civil War24 October 1890Isaiah filed a Civil War Pension Application on 24 October 1890 as follows. Late Rank: P, Co. F, 31 Reg't N.J. Inf. Class: Invalid, Application No. 942230, Law: Age, Certificate No. 924072. Additional date of filing listed: 13 Mar 1907.6
Death11 June 1911He died on 11 June 1911 at 1 Randall Street in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey,4
BurialHe was buried at Riegelsville Cemetery in Riegelsville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.7
Obituary12 June 191112 June 1911, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Easton Express, New Jersey News page, Obituary:. In the "New Jersey News" section: Isaiah Piatt, a veteran of the Civil War, died at 5:30 this morning at his home, No. 1 Randall street, aged 69 years. He is survived by the following children -- Joseph Piatt, of this place [Phillipsburg]; John and David Piatt, of Easton, and Mrs. Mitchell Johnson, of Springfield, Mass. Deceased was a member of the Lutheran Church at Riegelsville.8

Piatt, born Jan. 15, 1849, died June 11, 1911. Buried Reigelsville Cemetery. Laborer and teamster. Worked at Durham Iron Works. Enlisted as a private in Company F. 31st Reg. N.J. Vol."9

Edward Kilpatrick Had Been Dead Several Days Before His Body was Discovered

No one answering her knocking on the door when she went to the house where her father, Edward Kilpatrick lived alone on Wood Street, a short distance west of Seventeenth Street, about 6 o'clock last night, Miss Martha Kilpatrick became alarmed and asked Jacob Stout whose home is in that locality, to assist her in making an examination. The only person thereabouts who had seen Mr. Kilpatrick lately has been Mrs. Stout, and she was satisfied that it was five or six days that she had seen him.

Stout forced open a window, and crawling through it, unlocked one of the doors. Then a search was made through the building for the missing man. He was found dead on the garret and the condition of the body indicated death had occurred five or six days previous. Decomposition had already set in. The coroner was notified. The evidence indicated that death had occurred from natural causes, and no inquest was held.

When the body was found, it was wrapped tightly in quilts, over which a heavy overcoat had been thrown. The physician who had attended the old man lately is in the opinion he died of heart trouble aggravated by exposure to the cold. The deceased was 72 years old.

Mr. Kilpatrick was a Veteran of the Civil War. Besides the daughter previously named he is survived by two children, Byron Isaac of Pen Argyl, and Mrs. Sylvanus Wixon of Palmer Township. Mrs. Wixon and her brother had both made frequent requests that their father live with them, but he always refused to leave the "old home". He preferred to remain their alone. His children visited him frequently to look after the affairs of the house. The deceased had been of an eccentric disposition since the death of his wife, several years ago.
