Birth | 1810 | Joseph Steinmetz was born in 1810 in Pennsylvania. This is based on the 1850 census. |
Parentage | 1810 | 1810: I have connected Joseph Steinmetz to George Steinmetz and his wife Debby. Their marriage is assumed based on the baptism of one of their children in the Plainfield Church. The parentage is based on the location of George, Debby, and Joseph in the censuses of 1810 - 1850 in Lower Mount Bethel. In 1810, George purchased a property bordering Daniel Weaver, and in subsequent censuses, it can be shown from the surrounding neighbors that this property was near the Plainfield Township line, on current day Franklin Hill Rd. Daniel Weaver and other neighbors are consistent through the censuses listed, 1810 for George, 1820 and 1830 for Debby, and 1840 and 1850 for Joseph. They were very likely living on the same property for those 40+ years. |
Marriage | 14 March 1833 | He and Elizabeth Fell were married on 14 March 1833 "both of Lower Mount Bethel." by John Connelly, Esq.1,2 |
Census | 1840 | He appeared in the census 1840 in Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Joseph is listed as: Joseph Stonemetz: 1 male under 5 1 male 5-9 1 male 20-29 1 female 5-9 1 female 20-29 Neighbors: Jacob Weaver, John Flore, Henry Johnson, Jacob Bitz, Andrew Bitz, John Bitz. Image 19/34 |
Census | 1850 | He appeared in the census 1850 in Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Joseph is listed as: Joseph Steinmetz (age 40, Labourer, b. Penna) Elizabeth (age 36) John (13) George (11) David (9) Charles (6) Theodore (2) Next household is William Berry (33, Tailor, from Ireland) and wife Elizabeth (31, b. Penna, b. 1819) and children, and Deby Steinmetz, age 56, female personal estate $200. Elizabeth is Joseph's sister. Two households further is Jonathan Brown and his wife Elizabeth. In the 1860 census, William Berry's wife no longer appears, there is a 9 year old son, and he is living in the household of Margarette Teel, age 65, with real estate. Nearby live George Stonemetz (21) and his wife Rachel, with Sarah E and Irvin, and Elizabeth Brown, age 74 (the widow of Jonathan) and Christiann Johnson, female, age 74. Nearby names are Bitz, Flory, and Weaver. Image 21 of 75 for Lower Mount Bethel. (Note, there is a Deborah Steinmetz in Easton Cemetery, and Findagrave says 1787-Aug 1861, Plot E-189) |
Death | between 1854 and 1860 | He died between 1854 and 1860 It appears that Joseph may have died between the 1850 census, where he is listed, and the 1860 census where Elizabeth is listed in Easton and he is not listed with her. Their last child, Catherine, was born in 1854, so he was alive at that time. In the 1880 census she is listed as widowed. It could be possible he left her and died elsewhere. Death date and place unknown. |

Family Note | Parentage of Elizabeth Fell: UPDATE: The analysis below was confirmed by documents at the county archives concerning the estate of Valentine Albert, as of March 2022, HK. John Fell and his wife Elizabeth Albert were Elizabeth's parents. Elizabeth Fell was "of Lower Mount Bethel" when she married in 1833. The only Fell family in the area was the family of Nicholas Fell who got a land grant in what would become Lower Mount Bethel, in 1769, and had a son Heinrich/Henry, who had at least 10 children. The sons known to have grown to adulthood were: 1) John Fell. He married Elizabeth Albert and had 4 known children. He does have an unaccounted female listed in his 1830 census, but she seems too young to be Elizabeth, unless Elizabeth was born a few years later than later censuses indicate. In 1837, John's wife's father died, and the estate distribution was recorded at the Courthouse in Miscellaneous Book 4, and there is no distribution to Elizabeth. Rebecca, Mary, Valentine and Barbara received distributions. The index does not list a transaction between the Administrator (Jacob Albert) and Elizabeth Steinmetz or any spelling of her surname that I was able to find. (However there was one more share to distribute, see my 1837 Research Note for details). Assessment of the censuses of John Fell: 1810 - Lower Mount Bethel 1 male under 10 (Valentine, b. 1808) 1 male 16 - 25 (John, b. 1782, is 28) 1 female under 10 (Barbara, b. Jul 1810) 1 female 16-25 (Elizabeth Albert, b. Sep 1781, is 29) 1820 - Lower Mount Bethel 1 male 10-15 (Valentine, b. 1808) 1 male 26-44 (John is 38) 1 female under 10 (Rebecca) (Here we would expect 2 females, if Elizabeth were in this family, unless Elizabeth was born a few years later than we have found.) 1 female 10-15 (Barbara) 1 female 26-44 (Elizabeth Albert) 1830 - Lower Mount Bethel 1 male 20-29 (Valentine) 1 male 50-59 (John b. 1782 would be 48) 2 females 5-9 (Maria,9, and unidentified, possibly Elizabeth) 1 female 10-14 (Rebecca was 14) 1 female 15-19 (Barbara was 19 or 20) 1 female 40-49 (Elizabeth Albert, who died between 1830 and 1837, and probably before 1835) John is living next to his father, Henry Fell, who does have 1 girl under 10 as well as a girl 10-15. John's mother was listed as 45 and older 10 years before, in the 1810 census, so it is unlikely that she had a child after 1810. Therefore it could be possible that John could have had a girl, Elizabeth, named for her mother and grandmother, and born 1815-1818, and being cared for by her grandmother. Of course there are other scenarios. But since all the other Fell brothers seem to be ruled out as Elizabeth (Fell) Steinmetz's father, at least this is a feasible scenario. 1840 - Upper Mount Bethel One male 50-59 One female 20-29 (Not Barbara who lives nearby, widowed from Lohman, will marry Collins in 1841.) 2) Christian Fell. No census for Christian Fell shows a female child. Elizabeth is listed as a daughter of Christian and his wife Isabella Ross on Findagrave, and in some online trees, with no sourcing. This researcher had a discussion with a documented descendant of Christian and Isabella, who has done some very hands-on research on the family, and she stated she is not aware of any children other than one son named Henry, her ancestor. 3)Jacob Fell. Jacob had at least 7 children starting about 1821. Based on census records, it appears that all the females listed pre-1850 are accounted for on the 1850 census. I have not found an 1820 census for him, he was likely not yet married and working out for some family. 4) Daniel Fell. Daniel married Charity Nye about 1819, record not yet found. His 1820 census entry lists only himself and a female 16-25, presumably his wife. No children. 5) Nicholas Fell. In 1810, Nicholas had one female under 10. This is probably the female who appears in 1820 as 10-15. Probably their Elizabeth, who was born in 1810 and died in 1811, was never listed on a census. In 1820, the household had 2 females under 10 (Maria-1812, and Katharine-1817), and one female 10-15, who is likely the female listed in the 1810 census. She most likely married before the 1830 census. In 1830, there were only two females under 10. They lost a child (sex not specified) in 1824. Perhaps Katharine died and Maria married before 1830, when she would have been 18. The two females under 10 were born too late to be Elizabeth (Fell) Steinmetz. It would not be surprising if one of the two girls under 10 had been renamed Elizabeth, but they were born too late to be Elizabeth (Fell) Steinmetz, who married in 1833. Therefore, it does not look likely that Elizabeth (Fell) Steinmetz could have been the daughter of Nicholas Fell.1,2 | |
Birth | about 1818 | Elizabeth Fell was born about 1818. Her birth is between 1815-1818, based on her age on later census records. However, that is too early to match John Fell's 1820 census data. If she had been born about 1821, she would fit in John Fell's census. |
Marriage | 14 March 1833 | Joseph Steinmetz and she were married on 14 March 1833 "both of Lower Mount Bethel." by John Connelly, Esq.3,4 |
Research Note | March 1837 | March 1837. In March of 1837, Jacob Albert, the Administrator for the estate of his grandfather, Valentine Albert, who had died intestate, distributed his estate to the heirs of Valentine Albert. The distributions documented in Misc. Deed Book 4 were as follows: Isaac Albert, son, $173.56 Barbara (Albert) Reimer, daughter, $173.56 Rebecca (Albert) Werkheiser, $173.56 Susanna (Albert) Straud, $173.56 Joseph Albert, son, , $173.56 The children of Elizabeth (Albert) Fell, deceased wife of John Fell: Barbara (Fell) Lohman (later Collins), $34.71 Valentine Fell, $34.71 Rebecca Fell and Mary Fell to Christian Fell, Guardian, $69.42 Total to the children of Elizabeth (Albert) Fell, deceased, $138.88 Balance remaining: $34.68 Actually, the amount also have fractions of cents, which I did not list here, which would account for the balance remaining being off by $.03 cents. So it appears that one more share was outstanding to be distributed. I have not found the document that verifies that distribution. If Elizabeth (Fell) Steinmetz was the daughter of Elizabeth Albert, she would have been owed this share, and perhaps that was the case and perhaps it was distributed to her via some document that is filed in a different manner. UPDATE: 3/28.22: Found documentation of the distribution in Valentine Albert's Estate File at the county archives, also documented that Elizabeth Fell was the daughter of Elizabeth Albert Fell. For some reason, Elizabeth's share was not listed in Deed Book 4, but was clearly listed in the Estate file and also in the Orphan Court file, for Valentine Albert. |

In the 1860 census, William Berry's wife no longer appears, there is a 9 year old son, and he is living in the household of Margarette Teel, age 65, with real estate. Death | July 1883 | She died in July 1883 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania,5 |
Burial | July 1883 | She was buried in July 1883 at Easton Cemetery in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Section B, Row 8, Grave 5. The Findagrave site links her to Christian Fell and Isabella Ross as parents. Her name in the Easton Cemetery records is spelled Stinemetz. Based on the names of others in Section B, Row 8, on either side of her, this is not a plot, but individual burials.5 |
DNA Clues | 2021 | Mert does have two DNA matches, small segments -- see attached -- who descend from siblings of Elizabeth Albert Fell, Isaac and Barbara, both also children of Valentine Albert. It is possible the DNA match with these people is due to some other connection. However, Jody Bartha also descends from a Fell another way - in fact, Elizabeth Albert's brother Isaac appears to have married John Fell's sister Margaret. Ancestry Thrulines: Mert has about 10 DNA matches with descendants of Valentine Albert. |
