Family Note | Valentin may have had brothers Jacob and Peter, who are Alberts having children in the same time frame. His estimated birthdate 1755-1760. | |
Death | March 1835 | Valentin Albert died in March 1835 in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, His Orphan's Court file contains this statement: "That the said deceased died intestate sometime in the month of March A.D. 1835 leaving no widow but issue as above stated." He died before Mar 11, because his grandson Jacob Albert was appointed Administrator of his estate on 11 Mar 1835.1 |
Estate Administration | 11 March 1835 | Attached is the 26 page file of the Estate of Valentine Albert, file 4592, on record at the Northampton County Archives, Easton, PA. The documents in the file were created at various dates in the two years after his death, as his estate was settled. There is a basic inventory of his goods and chattel, taked on 13 Mar 1935. Since the documents say he died in March, evidently no time was wasted to take the inventory. Perhaps that was done to ensure that items were recorded and did not disappear before they were sold. The household goods of the deceased were sold at public vendue, 26 Mar 1835. There are 14 pages listing the items sold, the buyers, and the price. It is a fascinating picture of the community. The whole range of farm and home items were sold from a two-horse wagon with horses down to shaving soap and 1 pin cushion. Many items were purchased by his grown children and grandchildren, as well as neighbors. Local residents will recognize family names that persist in the area down to the 21st century: Reimer, Pysher, Lohman, Werkiser, Gum, Shook, Oyer, Labar, Stonemetz, Seiple, and of course many Alberts. I only noted 4 books. His grandson Jacob Albert (his Administrator) purchased the Hymn Book and New Testament. His son-in-law Barnet Werkiser bought the Bible, and his son-in-law John Fell the Prayr Book. Since the inventory mentions "German books", perhaps these were in German. Crops and Meat were sold privately. Livestock were not listed but his inventory lists 125 lbs. of smoked meat. The commodities listed were buckwheat, oats, potatoes, rye, hay, and corn. Much of the grain went to Howell & Howell, which may have been a mill in Martin's Creek. The 1851 Northampton County map in the Library of Congress shows a Howell & Keller Mill & Distillery at Martin's Creek. Then were listed the disbursements and expenses incurred at the time of finalizing the estate settlement. Taxes, professional services, advertising, court fees, clerking, tomb stones, surveying, medical attendance, and various accounts owing. Then Jacob Albert, Administrator, charged the estate for various labor and tasks that he carried out in the two years between the death of his grandfather and the final settlement: Boarding the jurors (who assessed the property), thrashing corn, hauling hay, grain and corn to Howells, to Ackermans, to Easton, and various other expenses. After totting up the intake from selling the property, goods, and the public vendue receipts, and subtracting all the expenses, there remained $ 1214.93 to be divided equally between the seven children of Valentine Albert. Since one of those children, Elizabeth (Albert) Fell, predeceased him, her 1/7 share was divided equally among her 5 children (Valentine, Barbara, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Mary). Note in 2022: Google tells me that the dollar has inflated 2,855.38% from 1837 to 2022. Therefore $1215 then would be worth $34,920.00 in 2022.2 |
Estate Administration | 22 April 1836 | Attached is the 25 page Orphan's Court file for the settlement of Valentine's estate. The documents in this file were created at various date in the 2 years after his death. A jury of 7 men were appointed to appraise the property, which was 5 lots totalling about 128 acres, and come up with a dollar value. They did so, and arrived at a value of: Lot 1: 104 acres 49 perches, $1,572.50 Lot 2: 11 acres 101 perches, $175.00 Lot 3: 4 acres and 13 perches, $98.00 Lot 4: 4 acres and six perches, $105.00 Lot 5: 4 acres and six perches, $97.00 For a total value of $2047.50 The heirs signed off on the agreement to sell the property, rather than to divide it among the heirs in some way. The documentation of all the heirs in the attached paperwork is very valuable to confirm the children and husbands and some of the grandchildren of the deceased. The estate expenses and distribution is detailed in the Estate file.1 |
