Birth | 1709 | William Brown was born in 1709 in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island. There is a birth of a William listed in the Little Compton "Brown" vital records, just under Alice, of Tobias and Alice, with a date of 1711. And underneath William is listed Judith (Palmer) his wife, March 28, 1719.1,2 |
Marriage | 10 December 1734 | He and Rebeckah Lawton were married on 10 December 1734 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island, "m. by John Wantoh, Governor." Listed between "John, of Tobias" and Nicholas (also a son of Tobias). Rebeckah is listed on William's Findagrave entry as one of his three wives. Two children are listed to William and Rebeckah in the Portsmouth Vital Records, p. 61 (see attached): Hannah 23 Jun 1735 Caleb 6 Nov 1736 Then next on Arnold's list, there are two listings that only mention Rebeckah: Thomas, of Rebeckah, June 10, 1741, d. Sept. 22, 1743 Chase Godfrey Cornell, of Rebeckah, 7 Nov 1746. If this is the same Rebeckah, there is a conflict because William, son of Tobias, married Judith Palmer in 1742. Further research needed.2,3 |
Marriage | October 1742 | He and Judith Palmer were married in October 1742 in Rhode Island Intention to marry published 18 Sep 1742. Judith "of Little Compton." Judith's sister Elizabeth married William's brother Robert.1,4,5,6 |
Death | 1762 | He died in 1762 in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island, Date based on will. |
Will | 7 August 1762 | He signed a will on 7 August 1762 in Newport County, Rhode Island. William Brown, last will, mentions wife Juda. Sons William, Pardon, Gideon, James and Palmer. Daughters Elizabeth Martin, Priscilla, Ruth, Sarah and Lydia. Probated 20 Dec 1762. This abstract is listed on ancestry.com, in their collection Rhode Island Wills and Probate Records, 1582-1932. This abstract does not list the son Peleg. |
Burial | June 1777 | He was buried in June 1777 at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island. William's Findagrave entry lists his birth date as 1709, and states "Married 1st Patience Arnold, 2nd Rebecca Lawton, 3rd Judith Palmer." I see a marriage for a William Brown and Rebeckah Lawton, m. by John Wantoh, Governor, 10 Dec 1734, in Arnold's, Vol 4, Portsmouth, p. 11. But no idea if this is the same William. I don't see a burial for a Rebecca Brown on Findagrave in Rhode Island. The marriage of his parents, and his siblings2 |
