Birth | 4 September 1739 | Benjamin Mason was born on 4 September 1739. The FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File lists his birth year as 1739. The notes on Freelove Barney's marriage list the source as Preston and Barney's "Genealogy of the Barney Family in America", p. 31, and in the notes they state: "Freelove Barney, b. Nov. 27, 1745; md. Oct. 3, 1779, at Swansea, Benjamin Mason, probably the one b. Sept. 4, 1739, son of Charles Mason (son of Benjamin, son of Sampson, the original emigrant). This Benjamin Mason md. (1) Feb. 3, 1760, Anne Mason." |
Marriage | 3 February 1760 | He and Anne Mason were married on 3 February 17601,2 |
Relocation | 1776 | In 1776, Benjamin Mason moved to New York. M.D. Pratt wrote that Benjamin lived in Rhode Island previous to the Revolution, and was a reserve office under the British Government. Pratt wrote that Benjamin moved to New York state near Albany in 1776, and became a Quaker and was a non-combatant in the Revolution. Pratt believed that his business was dealing in cattle. There is much in those statements for verification and further research. As of 1779 when he and Freelove were married, he was listed "of Freetown" on the marriage intention. Freetown is in Bristol County, Mass., just east of Swansea.3 |
Marriage | 3 October 1779 | He and Freelove Barney were married on 3 October 1779 in Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts, The Intention to marry is recorded in the Vital Records of Freetown, Massachusetts, "Benjamin Mason of Freetown entered his intention of marriage to Freelove Barney of Swansey, September the 18th 1779." The actual marriage date is taken from Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film # 0022366 item 3 & 0903395 items 7-8, records of the town of Swansea. The image of the marriage record is only available at LDS Family History Centers. M.D. Pratt says Freelove was Benjamin's 2nd wife.3,4 |
Death | 19 April 1822 | He died on 19 April 1822 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts, M.D. Pratt believed that Benjamin died in New York. On Findagrave, he is listed as buried in Hale Cemetery, Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. This is known as Swansea Historic Cemetery #10, and his burial entry there says "Per Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots." This is Patricia Law Hatcher's compilation of the DAR reports of Soldiers and Patriots' graves (available on Ancestry.) She says in the introduction that many of the submissions may have errors, especially the earlier ones. |

Research Note | American Genealogical-Biographical Index. Ancestry has a record stating that a Wheaton Mason born in 1780 has an entry in vol. 111, p. 462 of the American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI). The entry is Gen. Column of the " Boston Transcript". 1906-1941.( The greatest single source of material for gen. Data for the N.E. area and for the period 1600-1800. Completely indexed in the Index.): 21 Jul 1926, 4374; 6 Apr 1927, 5389 I don't know what this is, but I will look into it. The description says These include the Boston Transcript (a genealogical column widely circulated), the complete 1790 U.S. Federal Census, and published Revolutionary War records. The most recent update to this database reflects the inclusion of volumes 196-206. For researchers of American ancestors, this can be one of the most valuable databases available at Ancestry.com. Research Note | Prior Mason Pratt Connection? I am wondering if there is a possibility of a family connection between the Masons and the Pratts in upstate New York, before Henry Pratt married Laura Mason. For future investigation: In the Genealogy of Sampson Mason family, there were several Pratt's who married Masons. On page 182, Lydia Mason (1776 - 1860)married Otis Pratt (1777-1854). Otis and Lydia had 7 children in Thompson, CT. One of them, William Bennett Pratt, died in Indianapolis, Indiana. On page 188, David Mason (1761-1817) married Mehitable Pratt (1762 - 1852). They had 13 children in New Ashford, Mass. The second one was Benjamin Pratt Mason, b. 1783. Benjamin Pratt Mason is in the Taber/Tabor Family Tree of ThomasGibbs38 on Ancestry as born in Cheshire, Berkshire County, Mass and died in East Otto, Carraraugus, New York. The tree does not have parents for Mehitable White Pratt Mason, who died in Marion, Wayne County, NY in Mar of 1852. Benjamin P. Mason and his son Augustus C. Mason must certainly be the men mentioned as early Justices of the Peace in Ellicottville. (See History of Cattaraugus County, page 255). Attached is an SAR application for a Jesse Mason in the Revolution, through Benjamin P and Augustus. The immigrant of this line of Mason's was Sampson Mason, born in Bolton, England. Sampson Mason's Findagrave Record has links to the succeeding generations. Wheaton lived in the same area as Benjamin Pratt Mason and his son Augustus in upstate New York. I also find it an interesting coincidence that Wheaton's granddaughter Laura married the grandson of a Benjamin Pratt. The progenitor of this line, John Robert Mason of Bolton, England was married to Hannah Wheaton. However, the Wheaton surname comes in closer to our Wheaton, because his maternal grandmother was a Wheaton. I don't know if it is the same line, or a coincidence. But I have followed many red herrings related to Benjamin Pratt, so this may be another coincidence.1 | |

Research Note | 1825 | 1825. The Gazetteer and biographical record of Genesee County, N.Y. , on page 187, discussing the burial grounds of Batavia, NY, talks about an early ground off West Main Street set up in 1820. Only a few of the burials there were known at the time of the Gazetteer's writing, and among 4 or 5 they listed "Wheaton Mason, who died in 1825." Since "our" Wheaton Mason died in 1850, I wonder if Wheaton and Octive may have had a child Wheaton who died. There is a record on Findagrave for Wheaton Mason, with a birth date of 1780 and a death date of 1825. The creator provides the data from the 1820 census. Burial is listed as Batavia Pioneer Cemetery, Batavia, Genesee County, New York. Record created Aug 2, 2017 by CindyS. Find A Grave Memorial# 181990149, and looking at the general information on the cemetery, I get the impression that the memorial was created based on the listing in the Beers Gazetteer mentioned above. |
Marriage | about 1833 | He and Sarah Dow were married about 18333 |
Marriage | about 1848 | He and Betsy were married about 1848 Mason D. Pratt in his genealogy booklet states that Betsy was Wheaton's 3rd wife, with whom he had 2 sons, one named Cyrus. But he also states that Sarah Dow, his second wife, appears on deeds with him through 1848. Wheaton died in 1850, so there wasn't too much time for Sarah to die, and for Wheaton to remarry and have two more sons. Also, if Wheaton Mason is the man who died in 1850 and is buried in Jefferson Street Cemetery in Ellicottville, which seems very likely, then there is a Letter of Administration to Sarah Mason after his death. It could be, but should be investigated.3 |
Death | 26 May 1850 | He died on 26 May 1850 in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus County, New York,4 |
Burial | 28 May 1850 | He was buried on 28 May 1850 at Jefferson Street Cemetery in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus County, New York. |
Probate Record | 8 June 1850 | Wheaton was listed in probate records on 8 June 1850 in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus County, New York. when Letters of Administration were granted to Sarah Mason, to administer his estate. |
Probate Record | 8 June 1850 | Wheaton was listed in probate records on 8 June 1850 in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York. as follows: "At a Surrogates Court held at the hosue of John W. Mason, in the town of Freedom in and for the County of Cattaraugus, on the 8th day of June 1850, present Rensalear Lamb, County Judge Acting as Surrogate In the matter of the administration of the goods, chattels and credits of Wheatin Mason, deceased. On reading and filing the petition of Sarah Mason, the widow of Wheaton Mase, late of the town of Freedom in the County of Cattaraugus deceased, praying that letters of administration...of the said deceased be granted to her...this court being satisfied that the said petitioner is in all respects competent to act as administratrix...It is ordered that the prayer of the said petitioner be granted and that letters of administration issue to the petitioner in pursuance thereof." Two disinterested appraisers were appointed to appraise the property of the deceased, Eber Holmes and Ulisses P. Crane of the town of Freedom. |
Research Note | 1851 | 1851 Mistaken mention of 3rd wife. Mason D. Pratt in his genealogy booklet states that Wheaton married a 3rd wife, Betsy, with whom he had 2 sons, one named Cyrus. But he also states that Sarah Dow, his second wife, appears on deeds with him through 1848. Wheaton died in 1850, so there wasn't too much time for Sarah to die, and for Wheaton to remarry and have two more sons. In any case, Sarah is named as his widow in probate records after his death. So I don't know the source of the 3rd wife, and perhaps there was a Betsy Mason, and a Cyrus Mason, with some connection to the family. |

Obituary | 1891 | 1891, Randolph, Cattaraugus County, New York, Obituary:. Excerpted from the Historical Gazetteer of Catt. Co., Adams, 1893: Oct. 4, 1829, shortly after completing his twenty-first year, Mr. DOW married Freelove, daughter of Wheaton MASON, of Batavia. To them were born five children: James, born July 1, 1830 (deceased); Warren, born Jan. 15, 1833; Sarah, born Jan. 22, 1837 (deceased); Mary (Mrs. James G. JOHNSON), born Jun 12, 1842; Albert G., Jr., born April 17, 1844. Mrs DOW died Aug. 21, 1847, and April 23, 1850, Mr. DOW married her sister Lydia A. This union continued upwards of forty years and afforded a home life of rare happiness. Mrs DOW possessed a strong and winning personality, which gave her great influence over her surroundings. At once tender and forceful, unassuming, and yet full of courage and resources, she gave herself without stint to the service and happiness of others. To remarkable executive faculty she joined the happy power of stimulating other to action. Kind by natural impulse, her unostentatious charities were regulated by such good sense they never demoralized the recipients. Interested in all good works, she exerted a strong influence for truth and right living, and her gracious memory will never depart from the hearts of those who knew her. Her sad and untimely death, June 11, 1891, was occasioned by an accident at a railway crossing near her home in the village of Randolph. To this marriage was given one son, Charles M., who was born Aug. 1, 1853, and upon arriving at majority engaged in banking with his father. He organized the Jamestown National Bank in 1888 and has been the president of that institution from its beginning. |
