Little, 74, financial secretary of the Rutherford Methodist Church and chairman of the Rutherford Recreation Commission, died yesterday at his home, 11 Wheaton Place, Rutherford. A retired accountant, Mr. Little was born in New York City and had lived in Rutherford 33 years. Many years ago he was treasurer and then club manager of the old Union Club of Rutherford, now inactive. From 1926 to 1932 he was with the Central Guaranty Mortgage and Title Company of Rutherford. Mr. Little was appointed to the Recreation Commission in September, 1938, and was recently elected chairman. He had been financial secretary of the Methodist Church more than five years. He was also secretary of the Y-Church Softball League, and two weeks ago was re-elected through he protested that ill health inclined him to refuse the post. He had been secretary of the Y-Church Bowling League for ten years, and was instrumental in founding the league twelve years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Florence Smith Little; a son, William Spencer Little, of San Francisco, and a daughter, Miss Grace Annabell Little, of Rutherford. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:45 tomorrow night at the John T. Collins Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford, by the Rev. Everett Hallock, Methodist pastor. Burial will be private. |

Little, a former Bergen County resident and a retired senior vice president at Becton, Dickinson and Co. known for his support of the Boy Scouts, died Wednesday at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was 93, said his daughter-in-law, Judith Little of New York City. In his youth, Mr. Little was a Boy Scout in Rutherford. He later became a trustee of the Bergen County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. After he retired from Becton, Mr. Little donated $500,000 to the Bergen council, the largest donation in its history, to pay for a new headquarters and consolidate Scout concils in the region. Mr. Little said he hoped to encourage mergers to save money and cut down on the need for constant fund raising.... Born in Passaic on Jan. 24, 1912, Mr. Little attended Pace University and later in his career completed the advanced management program at the Harvard Business School. He lived in Rutherford until 1937, when he became a salesman for Becton, Dickinson and Co., a giant medical-supply company based in Franklin Lakes. In his 47 years at Becton, Mr. Little rose from salesman to senior vice president in 1968. He retired from Becton in 1974, but continued as a director until 1984. Mr. Little was also a director of Allergan Pharmaceuticals, the First National Bank of New Jersey, and USLIFE Corp. He was also active in the Aviaiton Hall of Fame in Teterboro and the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. He was a member and former president of the Arcola Country Club in Paramus, a member of the Old Lyme Country Club in Old Lyme, Conn., and a member of the Valley Club of Montecito in Santa Barbara. Mr. Little's wife of 46 years, Verbena May Little, died in 1987. They had two children, William Brian and Christopher, both deceased. William Brian Little, of New York, an investment banker and founding partner of the leveraged-buyout firm Forstmann Little, died Sunday of a heart attack. He was 58. Mr. Little began his career on Wall Street with White Weld & Co., mainly in the company's Los Angeles office. He moved back to New York in the late 1970's after the company was bought by Merrill Lynch. In 1978 he moved from Merrill Lynch and joined Theodore Forstmann and Nicholas Forstmann to form Forstmann Little, which relied primarily on equity financing to pay for the companies it bought. Between 1980 and 1992, the firm and its limited partners invested a total of $1 billion in 18 deals, reaping a return of about $5 billion.
