Earnest in all his duties, energetic and industrious, he will prove himself an important factor in any business with which he may engage himself.

Mr. Guernsey, who was the Yokahama representative of a New York importing and exporting company, for nearly two years, resided in Japan last year.

Cailatt, professor of modern languages at Bone College. They were married in Algiers in August. Mr. Guernsey is busy renewing old acquaintances, especially those who a number of years ago were members with him in the now defunct Bachelors' Club.
Newspaper Mention3 February 1923The 3 February 1923 edition of the Port Chester Daily Item, Port Chester, Westchester County, New York, reported We understand now why Harold A. Guernsey, one of the highest paid correspondents on the staff of this column, failed to send us any news from the continent of Africa, which we sent him to cover for us.

When he should have been scouting around Africa looking for news items for this column he was courting. Now he comes back to Port Chester with a bride and leaves the entire Dark Continent uncovered.

We give notice herewith that all our correspondents are fired. Elsie has given us the ice, Elliot Jardine has taken a run-out, and all the rest have been laying down on the job.

We cabled Guernsey to go to Egypt and write a story about the opening of the tomb of that bird King Tankahankamotoo, or whatever his name is. When he should have been doing this work, Harold was honeymooning.

However, congrats, Hal, old boy.

J.W.L. in the "You Said It!" column, p. 4
This joshing was an on-going practice between J.W.L. and Harold evidently because I see other similar mentions in other issues of the paper.

Baptism16 April 1892She was baptized on 16 April 1892 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Port Chester, Westchester County, New York. by Chas. Edw. Brugler, Witnesses Mamie Frost and Chas. Peters, mother listed as Lulu May Guernsey
Death22 October 1918She died on 22 October 1918 at 69 Smith Street in Port Chester, Westchester County, New York, of Influenza/Pneumonia2
Obituary23 October 191823 October 1918, Port Chester, Westchester County, New York, Port Chester Daily Item Obituary:. Mary's obituary was in a front-page article titled "Many Deaths From Pneumonia: Many deaths reported in Port Chester during the past twenty-four hours at the United Hospital and in homes." Mary's details were at the bottom of the second column and continued to page 6.

Mary B. Guernsey: The many friends of Mary Beula Guernsey, elder daughter of John A. Guernsey, of 69 Smith street, were shocked today to learn of her death from pneumonia. She was taken ill two weeks ago, and last Thursday pneumonia developed. Monday, she was taken to the United Hospital and grew rapidly worse, the end coming at 11:05 o'clock last night.

The young woman was born in Port Chester twenty-four years ago. Besides attending public and afterward High School she looked after the countless household duties of the family, which through misfortune, was left without a mother's guidance when the children were still quite young. She proved equal to the task, and through her capable management of the household affairs and her care of the younger members of the family won the admiration of the neighborhood, and was often referred to by her intimates as "the little mother."

She, a sister, Elsie, and a brother, Walter, graduated from Port Chester High School with the class of 1914, establishing thereby a record yet to be beaten. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, and of the Girls' Friendly Society of that parish.

Besides her father, she leaves the sister, Elsie, who is a teacher at Grace Church street school, three soldier brothers, Harold, who recently came home from Japan to get into the service, and is now stationed at Camp Sevier, S.C.; John, who is in a machine gun company in France and Walter, who is also in France having gone across as a member of Battery F, formerly old Twelfth Company of Greenwich. The brother, Harold, was sent word of the sister's illness when cnances of her recovery became slight and is believed to be on his way home. The sister, Elsie, was obliged to take to her bed Saturday, when her temperature became 103, after helping nurse the young woman who is now dead. The deceased's grandfather, Selah W. Guernsey, one of Port Chester's oldest resiodents, also survives her.

The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed."

[In just the month of October 1918, 126 Port Chester residents died of Spanish influenza or its complications.]
Burial25 October 1918She was buried on 25 October 1918 at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Section C, Lot 003, Grave 75., in Rye, Westchester County, New York. Minister, Harry B. Heald, Funeral Director, W. M. Craft, next of kin, John Guernsey.

A notice entitled "Card of Thanks" was published in the 28 Oct 1918 edition of the Daily Item:
"To the kind friends and neighbors who, in our recent bereavement, by kindly words and deeds, in these times when many have their own sorrows far greater than our own) helped us more easily to bear the grief of losing one most dear, we extend heartfelt thanks. Particularly does our sympathy go out to the overworked doctors, who labored so faithfully to defeat the enemy.

Obituary13 December 201213 December 2012, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia Inquirer Obituary:. Louis H. Guernsey Sr., 89, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, died of kidney failure Thursday, Dec. 6, at a care facility in Frederick, Montgomery County, where he had gone for rehabilitation after hospitalization.

Dr. Guernsey came to Philadelphia in 1973 and settled in Wayne. Several years ago, he moved to Shannondell, a retirement community in Audubon, Montgomery County.

He was an internationally renowned oral surgeon, author, educator, and pioneer of treatments, but his work resonated most with those whose shattered faces he rebuilt after war wounds or other disfigurements.

"During the Vietnam War, when my dad was chief of oral surgery at Walter Reed, my very best friend was evacuated from the battlefield, and my dad rebuilt his face, " recalled his son, John. The friend, recovered and now living in Iowa, "remembers my dad as talented and loving," he said.

Dr. Guernsey was born in Port Chester, N.Y., but spent his early years speaking French in Algiers, Algeria, then a French colony, where his father was the American Consul. When France fell to the Nazis in 1940, the family had to leave. Dr. Guernsey was 17.

"My dad and his younger brother were put on a ship with a note to my aunt and uncle that said, these are your nephews. Please take care of them," his son said.

Dr. Guernsey graduated from New York Univeristy and then from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1947, where he also received his master's of science degree in 1956.

After training, he landed a job as a dentist in Gooding, Idaho, and three of his four children were born there, his son said.

He entered the Army as a captain during the Korean War, and served tours of duty across the United States and in Europe. He retired with the rank of colonel in 1973 as chief of dental services at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Dr. Guernsey then became professor and chairman of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Penn School of Dental Medicine as well as visiting professor, oral surgery, at Baylor University and visiting lecturer at Georgetown University. He was professor emeritus at Penn at the time of his death.

He was honored with the American Cancer Society's Harold Krough Award for outstanding contributions to oral cancer control. He was a founding member of the Delaware Valley Dental Implant Study Club, ande a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.

He followed closely the development of his children. One became a nurse, one a doctor, and the third a marketing specialist, said his son, a lawyer. "He was outgoing, full of life, full of energy and determination," his son said. "He would share stories with you, and talk about matters of interest to you."

He enjoyed skiing, boating at the Jersey Shore, or going for drives in his antique cars, including a 1930 Chevrolet and a 1952 Oldsmobile.

In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Isabelle Margaret Napoli; another son, Louis H. Jr.; two daughters, Nancy Coelho and Paula Lefever; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A viewing from 7 - 9 pm, Thursday, Dec 13, at Szpindor-Meyers Funeral Home, 101 N. Park Ave., Trooper, will be followed by a 10 am viewing on Friday, Dec. 14 at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 1260 S.
