He became cnacellor, then master of work, and this year was elected representative to the Grand Lodge which meets in Elmira, July 23. In all the affairs of the lodge, Mr. Heleker ahs taken a very active part. In the two years in which Zephra was given by the lodge, he was a prominent worker and contributed largely to its success. When he retired from the chancellor's chair he was rpesented with a past chancellors' jewel, which at that time was not one of the customs of the lodge as it has since become.
He has been a member of Washington Engine Company for some years; was chairman of the membership committee for several terms, and last January was elected president of the company. He is not, however, a member of the department as yet.
He joined the Cigar Makers' Union Jan 1 1900, as soon as he had finished his apprenticehsip, and has been recording secretary several terms. He was a delegate to the Trade and Labor Council, and while a delegate was elected vice-president of the council. He was also a member of the finance committee of the union for some time.
Mr. Heleker was one of the charter members of the Star of Cortlandt Lodge, Shepherds of Bethlehem, recently organized, and is a member of the Workman's Sick Benefit Society of this village, and was treasurer of the Peekskill Wheelmen when that organization was flourishing.
At the last annual meeting of the Peekskill Building Savings and Loan Association he was elected a director.
In politics, Mr. Heleker has been a Socialist and cast his first bote for the nominee of the Social Democratic party for President. He has been a candidate for office on the Social Democrat or Socialist ticket at the village, town, state and national elections and a delegate to the various conventions of these parties.

Mr. Heleker is a jovial good fellow and that he holds the esteem of his fellows is attested by the fact that he has been chosen to so many prominent positions in the various organizations with which he is connected. |

Biography
Marriage | 26 November 1877 | John Jerome Hilliker and Louisa Valentine were married on 26 November 1877 in Peekskill, Westchester County, New York, |
Newspaper Mention | 24 December 1921 | The 24 December 1921 edition of the Highland Democrat, Peekskill, Westchester County, New York, reported John Jerome Heleker, the oldest member of Columbian Hose Co., No. 1, was recently honored by the company with a dinner and a gift of a gold watch and $50 in gold.
The Highland Democrat this week is permitted to give a brief sketch of the man who was so highly honored by his comrades.
Mr. Heleker was born in Peekskill, August 25, 1850. His father was James M. Heleker and his mother's maiden name was Sarah Jane Depew. Mr. Heleker was educated at the ---illegible---ard street school for a time, and at an early age went to work in the foundry. He was twelve years in the cleaning department of the Southard and Frost foundry. Then he worked a spell at Fishkill on the brick yard and also on the Corwin brick yard at Charles Point. He became an employee of the Union Stove Works in May 1876, and continued to work with that foundry until 1919. He is now employed at the Southard Robertson Company foundry.
Mr. Heleker joined the fire department as a member of Columbian Hose Company in 1876, but the men who were active in firemanic circles in the sixties claim he was a member of the company in 1868. He held the office of assistant foreman in the company in 1890. The early records of the company cannot be located hence his early membership could not be definitely stated.
If it had not been for Mr. Heleker, the present proprietor of the Daily Union would not have been among the living today. Mr. Gardner with some other boys were swimming at the first Annsville bridge and he unexpectedly walked into the "deep hole". As he was going down for the last time, Mr. Heleker passed that way and jumped in and brought the boy to shore and with the help of others brought him back to consciousness.
Mr. Heleker has not been much of a joiner and his only other organization beside the fire company is the Union Relief Association.
In politics he is a Republican but has never held or sought an office.
On November 26 1877, Mr. Heleker married Louise Valentine. She died on May 19 of this year.
Mr. Heleker has two sons and two daughters, one of whom is John J. Heleker, Jr., now Second Assistant Engineer of the Peekskill Fire Department. |
