Obituary | 2 April 2017 | 2 April 2017, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, The News and Observer Obituary:. Roy Holly Dearstyne, 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at his residence at Springmoor Retirement Community. Roy was born in Raleigh on August 16, 1923. He enjoyed growing up in Raleigh. He was in the last graduating class of Hugh Morson High School. After high school, he joined the Air Force. He was stationed in England with the 8th Air Force group. Roy was a navigator and flew seventeen bomber missions over Germany in WWII. He saw extreme combat and was highly decorated. Roy left the Airforce in 1945; he came home to Raleigh and entered State College majoring in mechanical engineering and graduated in 1948. He helped form, and captained, the first State College Golf team where he competed successfully for several years. On June 7, 1947, he married the love of his life, Catherine (Katie) Austell. The couple moved to Levittown, New York on Long Island, where Roy took a job at Electric Bond and Shave Company. He and Katie moved back to Raleigh in 1950, and Roy went to work for The Division of Purchasing and Contracts for the state of NC. During this time, Roy and Katie had 2 children, Mike and Holly; thus began a long, loving and wonderful family experience. In 1961, Roy went to work with Southern Desk Company selling institutional furniture all over the state. He later opened his own furniture sales company, Interplan, with a friend, Herbert Boyd, and was very successful until his retirement in 1972. Roy was an incredible man in so many ways. He was brilliant, well read, a wonderful conversationalist and an excellent golfer. He and Katie were blessed with dear friends and a wonderful social life. Roy was a member of the Jaycees, the Stag Club, Carolina Country Club, Wolfpack Club, Raleigh Golf Association and several other organizations. They were also fortunate enough to have traveled the World; this was a passion for both. Katie and Roy were married for almost 70 years until her passing this past December. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Springmoor Retirement Community in the auditorium. Private inurnment will be at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. The family would like to give a special thanks to the incredible care staff in the Clayton Wing at Springmoor for their dedication and level of care for Roy, as well as Katie. Also, a special thanks to our loving family friend, Lucile Perry. |

Obituary | 13 December 2016 | 13 December 2016, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, The News and Observer Obituary:. Catherine Austell Dearstyne passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Springmoor Retirement Community. She fought her illness with courage and grace, and inspired all of us in her passing as she did in her life. Katie was born in Raleigh, NC on August 3, 1924 to Brad and Alice Walton Bradley. Her father passed away when she was 2. Her mother remarried to Colonel Michael H. Austell, who adopted Katie and loved her as his own child. She loved him dearly, as did we all. Katie grew up in Raleigh and graduated in three years from Needham Broughton High School and from Woman's College (now UNCG) in 1945 with a BA in Art. She was a talented artist and worked at Woman's College and NC State College, and as an illustrator for the News and Observer. She also designed and made her own clothes. She won many blue ribbons at the NC State Fair over the years. Katie volunteered at the North Carolina Museum of Art as a Docent. She was also a founding member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Raleigh. She met and married the love of her life, Roy H. Dearstyne, in 1947. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage and were dedicated to raising their two children. They enjoyed traveling the world in their latter years. Katie enjoyed being a member of Carolina Country Club where she and Roy played plenty of golf. She was also a member of DAR, the Woman's Club, and served the community in many ways. She was a loving, fun wife to Roy, and a "too good to be true" mother to her children. "The Little Peanut" as she was affectionately known, when confronted with adversity or challenges involving her family and friends, drew on her inner "Tasmanian Devil" with courage, grace, and strength, and never backed down. She always upheld her dignity and honor as a member of "the greatest generation." Truly, she was loved by all who knew her and has certainly been granted a direct path to Heaven. Special thanks to the staff of Springmoor and to her special friend, Lucille Perry, and to Transitions Hospice. She is survived by her children, Holly Dearstyne Norwood and husband, Dr. Thomas Norwood and Dr. Michael Dearstyne and wife, Pamela Dawson Dearstyne; grandchildren, Marcus and Cameron Dearstyne, Sarah Kistler, Cate Dearstyne, Anna Freezor, Kelsey and Alexia Gage; and six great- grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Springmoor Chapel. Private inurnment will be at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. |

Obituary | 10 April 2020 | 10 April 2020, Somerset, Ohio, Bope-Thomas Funeral Home Obituary:. Leigh Pfeiffer Cravens Thomas, age 71, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, surrounded by her sisters and her beloved pets in her Somerset, Ohio home. Leigh was the first of seven daughters for artist William S. Cravens, Jr. and his lovely wife Roslyn Pfeiffer. She was born on April 6, 1949 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, spending her early years on their dairy farm in Dover, Delaware, and, later, in their daughter-rich home in idyllic Wyoming. Leigh left Delaware a young wife and mother after marrying her high-school sweetheart, Al Schubert, and giving birth to their son, Alan. She would soon find herself as the lead singer in a successful rock and roll band that travelled the east coast from Maine to Florida, which is where, because of the abundant sunshine, she finally settled. There, Leigh eventually became a flight attendant for Pan Am Airlines, and purser of the press plane for President Ronald Reagan. In her later years, Leigh’s path led her to rural Ohio, where a love for antiques prompted her to change careers; she immersed herself in refinishing and selling antiques, selling her own beautifully hand-painted wares, and creating a lovely home for herself and many beloved, rescued animals. Leigh lived an amazing and wonder-filled life, full of world travel and exhilarating experiences. She made indelible impressions on those she met, and formed life-long friendships that stayed strong until her last moments. Leigh was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William S. and Nancy Cravens; her maternal grandparents, John and Belle Pfeiffer; her parents, William S. Cravens, Jr. and Roslyn Cravens Moore; her beloved Aunt Dorothy (Dee) Meeks; and a dear nephew, Tyler Kirk Albertson. She is survived by her son, Alan Schubert; her uncle, Ken Meeks; her six younger sisters, Jamie Melvin (Raymond), Holly Yadacus (Thomas); Jill Cravens (Jack Olenik), Candy Albertson (Kirk), Laurie Rosenbaum (Kenneth), Jennifer Wooleyhand (Thomas); her many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; the many appreciated friends; and her beloved pets, Mel, Snippet, Ollie, Ellie, Vince, Maggie, Kitty and Patriot. In lieu of a public service, Leigh’s family suggests remembering Leigh by living life as fully as she did—through travel, constant music, love of family and friends, and by rescuing the many forgotten animals of the world. Leigh’s last words to her little sisters, given with an understanding smile, were “Stop crying.” With those words in mind, the encouragement of how Leigh herself lived life, and in other words she might herself have used for this occasion, just “Live, Laugh, and Love.” Note: Due to restrictions on gatherings, due to coronavirus, there were no funerals being held at this time. |
