Biography | From Edith Wicks & Virginia Olson's "Stamford's Soldiers:" "Enlisted 1 June 1780 in Capt. Reuben Scofield's Company of Coast Guards and served until January 1781, at which time he enlisted in Capt. Isaac Lockwood's Company of Sea Coast Gaurds at Stamford, Connecticut, and served until 1 January 1782. Joshua Ambler was born 9 September 1723 at Stamford. He was the son of Stephen and Deborah (Hoyt) Ambler, who were married 14 December 1721. Joshua married, first, on 6 April 1749, Bethia Weed. She was born about 1726, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Pennoyer) Weed, and was the mother of all his children. No death date is given, but on 24 May 1774, Joshua, now of 'Old Pound Ridge,' married second, Millescent (Hoyt) Weed, widow of Ebenezer Weed and daughter of Col. Jonathan and Millescent (Pennoyer) Hoyt. She was born 14 October 1722. No death date is given for her, but on 9 December 1788 Joshua married, third, Mrs. Martha Weed of New Canaan, Connecticut. She was the widow of Neheniah Weed. Joshua's will, probated 6 August 1793 at Stamford, was written 18 May 1790. No record of his death has been found. He may have been buried in the Congregational Church Cemetery, long since destroyed. Joshua in 1777 became a selectman of Stamford and served for ten years. He was active in the Revolution, first at Bedford and Pound Ridge, New York, where he served on the Committee of Safety and had many dealings in the service of supplies, and later at Stamford. On 27 Novermer 1780 he was a member of a Stamford committee to enroll recruits. He resided in Westchester County for a period extending from 1765 or 1766 to 1777. (The author quotes:)"Deacon Joshua Ambler was an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Bedford, New York, which was near his home in Pound Ridge. Birth | about 1760 | Benjamin Ambler was born about 1760. Conklin Mann, in his 1933-34 articles on Richard Ambler descendants, writes "His birth date offers a problem. His g.s. in St. Matthew's Ch. Yd., Bedford, states that Benjamin Ambler died 13 Dec. 1811 in his 62d yr. The census of 1800 shows him over 45 years old. On the other hand if Stamford town and ch. recs. are correct, Joshua Ambler named 3 sons Benjamin. Town recs. show a Benjamin, son of Joshua and Bethiah b. 20 Dec. 1749, a 2d Benjamin b. 24 Sept., 1758, d. 23 Feb. 1759. First ch. recs. have 'Benjamin, Sarah, Deborah and Bethiah children of Joshua and Bethia Ambler were bap. 3 Dec., 1760.' The compiler believes that Benjamin, who survived, was b. 1759-60."2 |
