John or Jacob Lesh
M, #6762, b. about 1750, d. before 1802
Lesh families of Northampton County from 1914 family history
Biography
Note | | William W. Lesh, in his Lesh/Loesch compilation, 1914, says "From a will filed in Easton, September 20, 1828, it appears that John Lesh, a Revolutionary soldier, had (1) a son named John Lesh, who left a widow, Rebecca Lesh, who lived in Williams Township and (2) another son, named Jacob Lesh, Northampton County, PA.
The will of John Lesh, 1771-1828, lists wife Rebecca, sons Abraham and Henry, and daughter Elizabeth. The will does not mention anything about a father or a brother.
I do not see a Revolutionary Soldier named John. There is one named Jacob. |
Birth | about 1750 | John or Jacob Lesh was born about 1750 in Pennsylvania. |
Research Note | | German Naming Convention. Up to the mid to late 1800's, the Germans often named babies two names, and the first name would be the same for all siblings, and the middle name would be the name they were actually called.
For example: Johann Georg Johann Philip Johann Peter Johann Wilhelm
Same for the females, Anna Margaretta, Anna Catharina, Anna Magdalena, etc.
This can lead to confusion if in some records (perhaps written by a non-German clerk, or a non-German compiling local history biographies) list the individual by the first name and others list him by the middle name.
Long story short, I am wondering if this may be the situation with John Lesh, supposedly in the Revolution but not found there yet, but Jacob is found in the War, in Northampton County, but not listed by Wm. W. Lesh. And actually Wm. W. Lesh was passing on information given to him by Mrs. Ora W. Lesh from Indianapolis, who was descended from the Johannes Lesh children who moved to Monroe County and later the Scranton area..
However, Sandy Lesh, in her 1998 "Pastfinder" article says that Barbara's 1848 obituary calls her Mrs. Abraham Lesh, and also that there is the name Johan Abraham Heinrich Loesch in a 1784 tax record in Forks. I will try to find those records. The only Northampton County soldier named Lesh that I found was Jacob. Since this soldier had both a Johannes and a Jacob, and Johannes had both a Henry and a Jacob, all these names could be possible.
I have seen Ancestry trees who called this man Johann Abraham Loesch, but I have not seen any documentation for it.1 |
Marriage | | He and Anna Barbara were married, date unknown |
Military Record | 4 September 1781 | On 4 September 1781 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, John is noted in military records as Inactive Duty in the 8th Company, Capt. John Santee, 2nd Battalion, 7th Class.
There are numerous Lesh soldiers listed on the state archives file, but no others from Northampton County. Philadelphia, Lancaster, Berks. I also check Loesch spelling, but none were listed.
See attached from the Pennsylvania State Digital Archives Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File. |
Family History | | Family of this soldier. Since this man was old enough to fight in the Revolution, we can estimate that any children would have been born around the Revolutionary War years. The John Lesh who married Rebecca qualifies, as he was born in 1771, so I will add him to this father. This is speculative family construction, not documented fact, at this point. And someone of similar age must have been the father of Mary and her siblings, so I will add that speculative man as another son. |
Death | before 1802 | He died before 1802 because his wife Barbara is listed as a widow in the 1802 baptism record of her granddaughter Elizabeth Lesh. |

Jacob Lesh
M, #6771, b. about 1774
Parents
Biography
Birth | about 1774 | Jacob Lesh was born about 1774 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This is the "other son" referred to in Addenda No. 3 of William W. Lesh's book on the Lesh/Loesh family. This would be a brother to John Lesh who married Rebecca and had Henry, Abraham, and Elizabeth. So the children of this Jacob would be cousins of Henry, Abraham, and Elizabeth.
This is a speculative family. As I find documentation of this person, I will add it. However, it is clear that some man in this time frame had to live, because the Revolutionary War soldier would have been too old, and someone from Henry and Abraham's generation would have been too young.1 |
Marriage | 28 November 1802 | He and Hannah Cooper were married on 28 November 1802 at Lower Saucon Reformed Church in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, |
Research Note | 1823 | 1823 Stroud Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. As of 1823, Jacob may have moved to Monroe County. His name is mentioned in connection with the establishment of the first schoolhouse in Stroud Township, on Shafer's Schoolhouse Road, in this article reprinted from the Stroudsburg Daily Record in 1900. |
