Military Enlistment | 7 October 1862 | John enlisted in the military on 7 October 1862 153 Pennsylvania Regiment in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Co. F. as a Private.1,3 |
Military Note | 1863 | The 153rd Regiment organized at Easton, Pa. September 1862 and Mustered out July 24, 1863. These men were engaged in the Battle of Chancellorsville Va., May 1,2,3 & 4, 1863 and Gettysburg Pa., July 1, 2 & 3, 1863. Monuments have been erected in their memory at Gettysburg, specifically where they fought at Barlow Knoll and East Cemetery Hill. (Description from Carol and David's FindaGrave collection of the graves of 280 veterans from the 153rd.) Kiefer writes about the regiment, "The 153d was composed in large part of young men. They were chiefly of the farming class, yet many of them were mechanics and professional men...Many of them were descendants of the patriots of the Revolution, and the spirit of "76" stirred their Teutonic blood." His book is available on Google Books (as of 2017) and is well worth reading for a first-hand view of the Northampton County men and especially their participation in the Battle of Gettysburg. After outfitting and training at Harrisburg, the regiment moved to the winter quarters at Potomas Creek Bridge (Brooks Station), Virginia. Kiefer says, "Much sickness and numbers of deaths occurred during the four months of our stay here. With the opening of spring we set out with Hooker for the famous battle field of Chancellorsville." (p. 18). Kiefer gives a detailed description of various aspects of the Chancellorsville defeat, before turning to the Gettysburg engagement, in which he participated, working at the hospital.4 |
Military Record | 1 July 1863 | On 1 July 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, John is noted in military records as wounded at Gettysburg. |
Reminiscence | 2 July 1863 | Description of Incidents at Gettysburg. Rev. Wm. R. Kiefer writes in his book, "History of the 153rd Regiment", p. 97: "The writer was on the ground during the days of the fierce cannonading, assisting the ambulance corps in the removal of the wounded which had been carried from the field to the Lodge of the cemetery gate. Among these I have a distinct recollection of finding two of my acquaintances, Samuel Lantz and Philip Ensley. I found John Koken near a fence where I dressed his wounds, and as soon as there was room for him had him carried to the improvised hospital in the barn...The house and its cellar was literally crowded with wonded men. Numbers of them died and were temporarily buried, while the wounded were conveyed by wagons to the barn hospital." On page 191, in a section entitled The Men of Company F, he writes further: "Comrade John Koken, whose widow lives at 328 Lehigh St., Easton, was a good soldier. We were school boys together, living in the same neighborhood from early childhood. He was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg. While I was around the hospital, assisting in the care of 1500 wounded, I strolled out back of the barn (our hospital) and wholly unexpected I found my friend John lying under shelter of a few boards which had one end laid on a fence. It was along side a barrack. He was very glad to see me, and his case was pitiable enough. He had been wounded in the chest, and the great profusion of blood had saturated his clothes, pocket book and all. There were $60 in bills so covered with blood that they required soaking and washing. I laid them out on the boards, with some pieces of garments, also, to dry. He requested me to send his money home. He was subsequently removed to a hospital, I think in Newark. He lived many years and was employed in railroading. There were 24 men of my Company wounded and 7 killed. I was acquainted with but two of those killed, Philip Halpin and Jacob Unangst." William R. Kiefer (1839-1921) was from Raubsville, and is buried in Raubsville Cemetery. His statement that he knew John Koken from childhood confirms other information that John grew up in Raubsville. The Halpin family owned property that bounded property owned by John's father when John was a child. William Kiefer's mother was Sarah Ann Shively Kiefer, daughter of Peter Shiveley and Anna Margaret Heinlein. Sarah Ann may have been a sister of Catherine Shively, the mother of John's wife Sarah Moser.5 |

Kugler. Recorded in Book G13, p. 333. |

Both this and his 1870 purchase are now in the borough of South Easton, but at the time still called Williams Township. This can be seen on the attached 1860 map of South Side. For many years, South Side was a few blocks about a half mile west on Canal Street. The area marked Williams Township was developed into lots by Charles Seitz and others. Recorded in Book A14, page 343. |
Property Record | 15 February 1873 | John was involved in a property transaction on 15 February 1873 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. John and Sarah sold to Jacob Lesh, for $700, Lot 31 in Charles Seitz development, Delaware Ave and Cooper St. The lot is bounded by other property of John's. This sale shows that it is difficult to tell from the land records which property is in the Raubsville, or Williamsport areas, on the River road, and which are in South Side but still considered Williams Township, either officially at the time, or by custom. It appears that Jacob Lesh, who lived next to them in Raubsville, may have moved to South Side also. |

John Koken, a well-known and respected citiaen of this place, fell dead at his home, corner of Nesquehoning and Fourth Streets, last evening. Mr. Koken was a Lehigh Valley brakeman for about 26 years, and came in last evening off his run, the "cannon ball" freight, at about 10 o'clock, feeling as well as usual. He didn't complain of being ill and talked cheerfully to his family. Shortly after entering the house he walked to the kitchen and fell dead. His wife hearing the heavy fall ran into the kitchen, but her husband had expired before she reached his side. Heart failure was the cause of his sudden death. The deceased was born at Raubsville 54 years ago and was a son of William and Mary Koken, deceased. About 30 years ago he was wedded to Miss Sarah Moser, who, with these children, survive him: Mrs. Brittain Huff, of this place; Mrs. O. B. Levan, Newark; Mrs. John Geary, of this place; Miss Rose Koken, of Baltimore, and Arthur Koken, who lives at home. Research Note | 1910 | 1910 As of 1910, she may have been. married to Geary, because Rosa's 1910 obit mentions Mrs. Cora Gary of Newark. However, Eugene Seip's census of 1910 shows him married M1. Maybe they were both M2. |

Living next to two other Koken households, Samuel (brother) and William.1 |
Birth | 14 February 1872 | She was born on 14 February 1872 in Raubsville, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Rosa's death certificate shows her birth year of 1872. It is not crystal clear, but looks like a 2. Her gravestone lists 1872 and her obituary says she is 37 in Jan. of 1910. On the 1870 census, they have a baby girl, born in February of that year, named Cora. It is possible that a baby girl Cora was born in Feb of 1870, and died, and then in 1872 they used the same name, not uncommon. Although it is quite coincidental they would both be February. For now I will use the death certificate date.2,3 |

Research Note | I have confirmed through death certificates of some of the children, that this George Moser in Williams Township is the man listed on USGenWeb Berks County website, who married Catharine Shively. And I have confirmed through obituaries of children who list these parents on death certificates also list Mrs. Sarah Koken as a surviving sister, so I have confirmed that this is our correct Sarah Moser. http://www.berks.pa-roots.com/familyfolder/Moser.html on USGenWeb Berks County website, list these children: i.BENJAMIN MOSER; Born About 1830 in Northampton, County, PA. ii.HY MOSER; Born About 1833 in Northampton County, PA. iii.FR. MOSER; Born About 1841 in Northampton County, PA. These children are listed in the 1850 census in Bethlehem (68/87). The father is a Geo., age 52, so born about 1798. A little bit older than George 11 Dec 1797. Unfortunately, this George also has a wife Catherine. Children listed are Ben (20), Hy (17), Fr (9) and S. Schick (female,9). The others are boys. Neighbors are John Brown and V. Smith. Therefore, you can see them on the 1860 property map, about halfway from Bethlehem to Hecktown. Benjamin F. Moser is also there. In 1860, the same family shows George as 61 (b. 1799), with Catharine age 64, Henry (27) and Francis (19), and Caroline Bowdich (11) There is also a Benjamin born 17 Nov 1824, bp. 15 Jan 1825, parents Johan and Elisabeth Moser. This might be George's brother John Jacob and Elizabeth Nickom. | |
Birth | 11 December 1797 | George Moser was born on 11 December 1797 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Born Johann Georg. Birth and Baptism record viewed on Ancestry, in the Records of First United Church of Christ, Easton. originally the First Reformed Church of Easton.1 |
Baptism | 17 October 1798 | He was baptized on 17 October 1798 at First Reformed Church in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized by the Rev. Thomas Pomp, minister at Easton from the year 1796. Sponsors were Georg Hertzel and his wife. He may have been baptized at the Dryland Reformed Church in Hecktown because his parents were buried there. The ministers for the German Reformed Church at Easton supplied the congregations at Dryland, Plainfield and Greenwich, NJ. |
Census | 1820 | He appeared in the census 1820 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. George is listed as: 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45, 1 in Agriculture. Other Mosers listed: Frederic, Jacob, Andrew. Frederic seems older than Jacob or Andrew. Also Thomas Nickum and John Shively. Also a name that could possibly be Peter Shiveley, on image 6 of 7. Really looks more like Sheerley. |
Marriage | 3 December 1826 | He and Catherine Shively were married on 3 December 1826 Their marriage is listed in the Register of St. John's Lutheran Church, Easton, Pa., page 90. It was announced in the Easton Sentinel newspaper, on Friday, 22 Dec 1826. They were married by the Rev. John P. Hecht.2,3 |
Research Note | 1830 | 1830 Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Ancestry indexes 4 George Mosers in Northampton County for 1830. I scrolled through 1830, Williams Township, and there was no George Moser. See attached. Our George must be one of the first 2 on the attached list, because he would have small children. Elizabeth Nickham is on image 21 of 30, between Peter Young and Barnet Unangst. Only one female 60 -69. A female in the Young household is 70-79. |
Census | 1840 | He appeared in the census 1840 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. George is listed as: One male 10-14, one male 20-29, one male 40-49, one male 50-59 2 females under 5, 2 females 5-9, 1 female 10-14, one female 30-39 Neighbors are several Hartzells, Melchior Hay, several Lamberts, Philip Brotzman and John Brotzman, several Woodrings and several Richards. This looks very much like he could be already on Morvale Rd or in that general area. |
Census | 25 September 1850 | He appeared in the census 25 September 1850 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. George is listed as: George (53, Farmer, real estate of $900), Catharine (42), Margaret (23), Peter (21, Labourer), Maria (16), Catharine (13, at school), Sarah (10, at school), Elizabeth (8, at school), George W. (5), John (3), Mary M. (1) All in family have surname Moser, all born in Penna. Neighbors are Abel Hineline, Tavern Keeper, Israel Diehl, Jacob Andrews, James Fisher, Jacob Eyerly, Nicholas Lantz, Joseph Baden, John Jory. George is the only Farmer, all the others are trades, such as Boatman, miners, carpenters, mason, moulder, machinist. |
Census-not found | 1860 | George has not been found on the census of 1860 Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Scrolled manually through the whole census for Williams Twp. It looks to me that South Easton was included under Williams Twp for 1860, because Brittain Huff, for example, is in South Easton in 1850 and 1870, and listed under Williams Twp for 1860, and I have no reason to believe he moved. Also scrolled through "Easton" which was South Easton. I looked for downtown Easton and it seems to be labeled Lehigh, but I did not go through it. His son George appears to be living with his sister Maria Hahn and her husband. His son John appears to be living with Jacob Lesh and his wife Eliza. They are the only two family members I could find, besides Catherine Brotzman and Maria Hahn. There is another George Moser, age 67, b. 1793, in the household of William (41) and Mary Ann Richard (35). Several children, including John C. who died in 1934, so has a death certificate. It lists name of father William Richards, name of mother Mary Moyer. Informant was Mrs. Wm H. Ihrie. buried in Hays. But looks like another son, Irwin P, 1864 - 1934, died in Wilson, also lists Mary Moyer as mother. William Richard is listed as an Innkeeper. If this is our George, the age is wrong, because 67 would put birth at 1793. The George Moser who is association with Sabilla Moser Bercaw is in the 1860 census in Phillipsburg (63/94) living with his son John who has married, and also his son George Jr. lives there. So George Sr's wife Susanna must have died by then. This is the George who had Cinderella Shick with them in 1850, whose mother was Emeline Moser. |
Census-not found | 1870 | George has not been found on the census of 1870 In 1870 there is a George Moser age 73, in the household of Sabilla Bercaw. This is the George (wife Susanna) who is in Easton in 1850 with children George Jr., John H., Rebecca, and Cinderella Shick. |
Census-not found | 1880 | George has not been found on the census of 1880 In 1880, there is a George Moser, age 80, in Phillipsburg (image 1 of 206). The numbering of dwellings and families is confused. It looks like he is living in the same dwelling as Susan Merrick (20) and her two year old son Charles. Susan is a domestic servant. Susan may be in the same family as the next-door William Titus (23) and wife Rebecca. This could possibly be George and Susanna, who had a daughter Rebecca. There is a George Moser in the household of Benjamin F, in Bethlehem. This is the George with whom George 1797 is confused in numerous places online. |
