Daughter | Elizabeth Rupple (b. 1896, d. 31 May 1959) |

Birth | 1866 | John H. Rupple was born in 1866. |
Marriage | He and Bridget Kelly were married, date unknown I have not found documentation for this marriage. I am not sure if Bridget was the same person as Delia found in censuses married to John Rupple, or if there were two people Bridget and Delia. There is conflicting information.
Newspaper Mention | 4 June 1902 | The 4 June 1902 edition of the Morning Call, Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, reported Third Death from Small Pox William Rupple Died from the Disease at West Bethlehem The third smallpox patient of Bethlehem to succumb was William Rupple, who died at his home, 146 Vineyard Street, West Bethlehem, on Saturday night at 11 o'clock. Dr. Walter, the smallpox physician, was in attendance when the man died. Rupple had been quarantined since May 24. It is said he contracted the disease at the home of his sister, Mrs. Charles Harlacher of South Bethlehem, when the Sherry boy was infected. Since last Thursday Rupple had grown worse. Dr. Walter issued a certificate of death and sent it to the West Bethlehem Health Board. Undertakers Kinney and Brickel were telephoned for but did not respond Saturday night. Sunday morning Undertaker Kinney was engaged. There was some difficulty about the Bethlehem Health Board accepting the certificate of death which Undertaker Kinney had received from the West Bethlehem Health Board. After considerable loss of time the matter was adjusted. The remains were interred in Nisky Hill Cemetery shortly after midnight on Sunday. The West Bethlehem police experienced some difficulty in keeping morbidly curious people away from the Rupple home when the remains were carried from the house to Undertaker Kinney's closed wagon. It is said that some people who ought to know better behaved most shamefully in front of the home of the deceased. Rupple was 38 years old. The family moved from Catasauqua this spring to South Bethlehem and later took possession of the Vineyard Street house. The deceased is survived by his second wife, four children and two step-children, on brother, John Rupple, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Harlacher. At the time Rupple became infected and up to the time of his being quarantined so many persons had been at his home that the attending physician was obliged to vaccinate 20 persons, and in each case the vaccination was successful. The rumor that Mrs. James Raub had become infected is unfounded. The Harlachers and the Sherry boy at the South Bethlehem smallpox hospital were reported by Dr. Walter as doing nicely. |
Census | 1910 | He appeared in the census 1910 at 5 Main Street in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. John is listed as: John Ruple (Head, age 50, second marriage, married 25 years, b. Penna and parents also, Laborer, Odd Jobs) Celia (Wife, age 49, second marriage, married 25 years, 4 children, 4 living, born in Penna, and parents in Ireland) James (Son, age 17, single, Finisher in Silk Mill) Elizabeth (Daughter, age 15) Mary (Daughter, age 10) Hattie (Daughter, age 7) Daniel Lewis, Jr. (Boarder, age 28, Single, born in Penna and parents also, Teamster for Contractor) Note: This would put a marriage date of 1885, when this wife would have been 24 years old. This wife was born in Penna., Bridget was born in Ireland, shortly before immigrating. In the 1880 census she is listed as age 9. This wife would have been born about 10 years earlier. In 1885, Bridget would have been 14. So it would be very unlikely that she would have had a second marriage in 1885. This Mary was born in 1900. Mary (Kelly) Muschlitz was born in 1895 according to her obituary. On her gravestone her birth year is 1898. Mary's obituary says she was a daughter of the late John and Bridget (Kelly) Rupple. According to this census, the daughter Elizabeth was born in 1895. That matches well enough with her obituary birthdate of 1896. Her obituary states she was a daughter of the late John H. and Delia Kelly Rupple, and clearly states she has sisters Mrs. Harry Kline and Mrs. Clarence Muschlitz. |

Occupation | Euphemia worked as a clerk at Bush & Bull Co. Bush & Bull Vintage Photos From Frank Whelan's "Ask Frank" column for the Morning Call, 17 Apr 2002: "The Bush & Bull department stores were founded in 1871 in Easton by Solomon R. Bush and James V. Bull. In their early years they also had stores in Williamsport and Watertown, N.Y. According to a March 5, 1932, article in The Morning Call, Bush and Bull took over the old Bethlehem Bee Hive store -- founded by Joseph Rice and John Learch in 1857 -- on Oct. 8, 1908. The article traced the roots of the Bee Hive and its predecessors to the store founded by Timothy Horsefield and run by English Moravian Jasper Payne in 1753. The newspaper called it "the first store in the Lehigh Valley." In 1932, Bethlehem and Easton stores employed 300. Solomon Bush's son, F. Royce Bush, took over the business in the 1930s. The younger Bush was well known in the community with an avid interest in air travel. In the late 1930s, he was a passenger on the first Pan American Airlines flight across the Atlantic. In 1937, Bush had tickets for a trip that he never got to make in the ill-fated German airship Hindenburg. In 1938, the Easton Bush & Bull was closed. The Bethlehem store was sold in 1955 and became Orr's. Now, the site is Main Street Commons. F. Royce Bush retired from the business and died in 1962."
