Newspaper Item | 30 March 1909 | According to the 30 March 1909 edition of the Easton Daily Free Press, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, ,Lehigh Valley Engineer Killed "Britton Huff, of This City, Fatally Injured at Coplay, Died in Hospital Engine Sideswiped Wreck Long Rod from Derailed Box Car Entered Cab of Engine and Struck Unfortunate Inflicting the Injureis which Caused His Death -- Thirty Years on the Road Britton Huff, a well known engineer on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, received injuries by his locomotive sideswiping a derailed box car in the yards at Coplay at 6:45 o'clock on Monday evening which resulted in his death at St. Luke's Hospital, at South Bethlehem, at 10:15 o'clock. He was 48 years of age. Huff was engineer of the east-bound passenger train No. 64, due in Easton at 8:05 o'clock. The drill crew at Coplay had shoved a draft of cars on the track on the side of the east-bound main track and two of the cars became derailed, one of them partly obstructing the east-bound track. Without noticing that the cars were derailed, the crew left to get more cars and at this time, the east-bound passenger train came along at a high rate of speed. Huff was in the cab of his engine, No. 2599, and when the engine struck the side of the box car, a long rod which projected from the car entered through the front of the cab and struck Huff in the side. His pelvis was crushed and internal hemorrhages were caused by his injuries. Julius Peters, fireman of the engine, hurried over to the engineer's side of the cab. Huff was found with one hand resting on the brake valve, having brought the train to a stop. The trainmen went to his assistance and he was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, South Bethlehem. He lost consciousness on his way to the hospital and died at about 10:15. George Blank, of Lehighton, a Lehigh Valley engineer, who was on the train, brought the train to Easton. Huff had been in the employ of the Lehigh Valley Company for about thirty years, twenty-one years of which he had been working as an engineer. He was highly esteemed by the officials of the company and was popular among his fellow employees. He resided at No. 124 East St. Joseph street, South Side. Merwarth and Helen Huff, of the South Side; also by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Huff, of the South Side; three brothers, William Huff, Jr., and Frank B. Huff of this city; Leighton O. Obituary | 9 September 1910 | 9 September 1910, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Easton Daily Free Press Obituary:. Elizabeth, wife of William Huff, one of the most esteemed of the older residents of the South Side, died at 8:45 o'clock last evening at her home, 109 Orchard street. For nine years she had been an invalid, four years of which time she spent in her room, but never during that long period was she heard to murmur against her physical condition. She accepted her fate with true Christian fortitude and when her family and friends wept over her sufferings and illness she admonished them to be calm and with her amiable disposition renewed the cheer of the home. Two weeks ago Mrs. Huff was compelled to go to bed and from that time she gradually sank until death finally laid its hand upon her. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hutchinson, of this city, who died many years ago. She was born at Flemington, N. J. 71 years ago. Birth | 1 December 1894 | Russell R. Kreil was born on 1 December 1894 in New Jersey. There is a family story, may or may not be true, that his mother didn't want him, and left him in his high chair in the cemetery. He was raised by his grandparents. His mother's name was no longer known by 2017 when I was entering this data, but was found on his death certificate.1 |
Baptism | December 1894 | He was baptized in December 1894 in Phillipsburg, Warren County, New Jersey. He was baptized by Rev. Isaac Cook of Phillipsburg, and named Raymond Russell Kreil, according to the Free Press article written in 1896 when Russell was abandonned. |
Newspaper Mention | 21 August 1896 | He was mentioned in a newspaper report about Frederick Kreil when 21 August 1896 edition of the Easton Free Press, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, reported South Easton News: A Child Deserted by its Mother The Father Arrested for Deserting his Family. The Mother has Disappeared John Messer, proprietor of the brick works, on Delaware street, on Tuesday afternoon found an 18 month-old child in the brick yard, which he learned had been deserted by its mother, Mrs. Frederick Kriel. He took the child to the residence of William Walter, corner of Lincoln and Delaware streets, and then informed Officer Stocker. The latter made an investigation of the case and found that the mother had disappeared and that the father, Frederick Kriel, had deserted his family, and the mother being unable to provide for the children, had left the infant in the brick yard. The officer went before Justice Steiner and swore out a warrant for the arrest of the husband and father for desertion. He was arrested last evening by Constable Werkheiser and was taken before Justice Steiner and held for a hearing this evening. Constable Werkheiser will take the child to the county poor house this afternoon. The other children have also disappeared and it is thought they are somewhere in Phillipsburg with their mother. [2019 Note: Delaware St. is now called Reynolds St., between Centre and Coal Sts. In the 1894 Directory of South Easton, John D. Messer is listed as a brick manufacturer, residing at 713 Grant St. At that time, and for many years, Ernst Kreil, Frederick's father, lived at 620 Grant St. William Walter is listed as a brick manufacturer, residing at 434 Delaware, which the news article says is the corner of Delaware and Lincoln. On the 1874 South Easton map, a Brick Yard is shown on open property of A. Transue, near Centre Street. At the time of this article it may have extended further east towards Delaware.] |
Newspaper Mention | 25 August 1896 | Russell R. Kreil was mentioned in a newspaper report about Frederick Kreil when 25 August 1896 edition of the Easton Free Press, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, reported Frederick Kreil held for Court The Mother Who Deserted Her Child Appears at the Hearing Frederick Kreil, the alleged husband of the woman who deserted her child in the brickyard, and who was arrested charged with desertion, was given a hearing last evening before Justice Steiner. The mother of the child appeared at the hearing and said after she left her child, she went to the home of her parents in Phillipsburg. She had left the child on the suggestion of friends because the father refused to do anything for her or the child. They were not married, but had lived together for four years and followed boating on the Morris canal. He had always treated her cruelly and had deserted her and had gone to live with his parents in Browntown. Kreil, when asked by the Justice why he refused to care for the child, said he did not love it and had never carried nor held it except when it was christened on the boat by Rev. Isaac Cook, of Phillipsburg, when he had named it Raymond Russell Kreil. Kreil was held in $300 bail to appear at court to answer a charge of desertion, and as soon as Justice Steiner was through with him, Constable Werkheiser served a warrant charging Kreil with non-support. The complaint was made by the woman some time ago before Justice Young, of Easton. The prisoner was held for a hearing next Saturday. It was the intention of Constable Werkheiser to have a warrant issued charging the woman with abandoning her child, but changed his mind after he heard the story of the cruel treatment she had undergone. The child was taken to the poorhouse yesterday afternoon. |

The address matches the Directory of 1908, age is close, birthplace, the fact that he immigrated, although 10 years different from 1900 census, and widowed [Anna M. died in 1909] and his grandson still living with him, although it says Russell A. rather than R. I notice that Ernest's wife was interchangeably referred to as Anna or Mary, and perhaps Ernest also had a middle name. |
