William: Males: 2 under 5 1 30-39 Females: 2 5-9 1 30-40 1 70-80 Rosana's household: Males: 1 5-9 1 10-14 1 15-19 2 20-29 Females 1 40-49 [Rosana born 1791-1800] Image 5 of 28 See this family on 25 of 64 in 1850: Rosanna, most likely sons Samuel, John, James, Abraham Same families living next to William and Mary Ann in 1860 on Image 59 of 72. |
Property Record | 29 August 1843 | William was involved in a property transaction on 29 August 1843 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Jacob Carpenter had been awarded $176 damages in the court of common pleas, to be paid to him by William Koken "for the not performing certain promises and undertakings then lately made by the said William to the said Jacob." William did not have the money available and did not pay him. It sounds as though William had been given seven years to come up with the funds, but the "rents and profits from said tract of land...were not sufficient to satisfy, within the space of seven years, the judgement upon which the said execution was issued." During that time he was unable to find a buyer or had not found a buyer for the property. William was notified that he should have the moneys before the Judges of the court at Easton, on the third Monday of April 1843. Evidently that did not happen, because the Sheriff, Peter Steckel, was ordered to seize "a certain tract of land situated in Williams township, in the county of Northampton, bounded by lands of Michael Halpin, George Kurtz, and others, containing one acre strict measure whereon is erected a one story frame house 24 by 15 feet and frame stable 20 by 21 feet, which remained in his hands unsold, for want of buyers, so that he could not have those moneys in the said writ mentioned, at the day and place therein contained." So the Sheriff posted notices of sale, for 7 Jun 1843. The Sheriff sold the property to Jacob Carpenter for the sum of $280, "he being the highest bidder." I didn't clearly understand if the $176 damages was subtracted from the sum paid by Jacob. In any case, the deed was transferred from William to Jacob on 29 Aug 1843. Book A7, page 601 |
Census | 1850 | He appeared in the census 1850 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Census | 29 August 1870 | He appeared in the census 29 August 1870 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. William is listed as: William (age 60, Laborer, Real Estate $500 (?), Personal estate $500 (?), born in Penna, cannot read or write), Mary (age 65, keeping house, born in Penna), Sarah (age 19, born in Penna, cannot read or write), Theodore Hackady (age 2/12, born April 1st) (last name very hard to read. Could be Hardwick or something else.) Living next to two Koken families, Samuel and John. Could Samuel be a brother? Too old to be his son, and looks like the Samuel who wrote the will and died in 1888. Therefore, perhaps Louisa Diehl was his second wife? and the older boys were his sons by an earlier marriage? This census shows William owning property, but I was not able to find a record of a property transaction after 1843. Image 50 of 161 |

However, almost everyone on all the surrounding pages is marked the same way, and some people are marked "Cannot read" but they are not marked "Cannot write". I am really wondering if the enumerator marked it exactly backwards, and meant "Can read and write" or "Can read but not write". I find it hard to believe that the majority of landowning farmers in Williams Twp in 1870 could not read or write. |

Research Note | Sabilla appears to be the daughter of a different George, although he seems to be almost the same age. Online I see trees that show her as daughter of George and Susanna (14 Mar 1819) and they are in the 1850 Bushkill Ward census, with various other chilldren. So watch out for a George Moser with George W., John H., Rebecca, Sybilla
Birth | 1828 | Sabilla Moser was born in 1828. I am adding Sabilla as a daughter based on the 1870 census of Sabilla Bercaw with George Moser living with them. |
Marriage | Jacob Bercaw and she were married, date unknown
Census | 20 July 1870 | She appeared in the census 20 July 1870 at Bushkill Ward in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Sabilla is listed as: Sabilla Bercaw (42), Keeping House, with Lizzie (10) and Ida (18), and George Moser, age 73. Since George's wife Catharine did not die until 1911, why is he here, and where is she? Could this be a different George? |
