Research Note | 12 December 1833 | 12 December 1833 Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Death of Eliza Ann Kogen. A child was recorded as buried in Williams Twp, in Kiefer's "Some of the First Settlers" (p. 331): Eliza Ann Kogen, Williams, 1 year, 4 months, 2 days. So she was born August 10, 1832. Could possibly have been a child of Rosanna. I don't have a birth date for James. |
Census | 1840 | She appeared in the census 1840 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Rosanna is listed as: Rosana Gogen, indexed Goyen on Ancestry. Note | This man may be the brother of George William, or he might actually be his father (merge with 6661). Rosanna seems too young to be William's mother, but she could be the 2nd wife of his father. I am adding this male so that I can add children for Rosanna and have them connected in some way to George William. When I find the correct relationships, I will revise this.
Research Note | I do not know that Joseph is a brother of George William, nor do I have proof that Rosanna is his wife, beyond the fact that Joseph disappears after the 1830 census and she appears, with several boys. This is a family constructed speculatively. However, we see on the map that William Koken lived next to S. Koken, i.e., Samuel, and the property records indicate that this is not referring to William's son Samuel (who would not have been old enough at the time of the property transactions to enter them), so we assume it is Rosanna's son Samuel, and we know they lived next to each other for many years.
Birth | between 1780 and 1790 | Joseph Koken was born between 1780 and 1790.1 |
Census | 1820 | He appeared in the census 1820 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Joseph is listed as: Joseph Kogen in Williams Twp. Males: 4 < 10 1 10-16 1 26-45 0 45+ Females: 2 <10 1 26-45 If this is George William's father, George William could be the one male 10-16, and that would mean that he had 4 younger brothers and two younger sisters. However, my idea that Rosanna was the wife of an older brother wouldn't work, since we don't see an older brother here. That would mean that Rosanna is his mother, and all the other males are his younger siblings. He would be the oldest. For this wife to have 7 children by 1820, including 6 children under 10 (born 1810 or later) she would need to have children: 1808 1810 1812 1814 1816 1818 1820 so she would need to be probably at least 15 in 1808 born at least 1793. The boy 10-16 could be a farm worker from another family. Alternatively, this could be a second wife, and there could be other older children no longer at home. |
Census | 1830 | He appeared in the census 1830 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Joseph is listed as: Joseph Kogen 0-3-0-1-0-0-1 0-0-1-0-0-1-0-0-1 3 males 5-9 1 male 15-19 1 male 40-50 (born 1780-1790) 1 female 10-14 1 female 30-39 (born 1791-1800) So this could be Rosanna 1 female 60-69 (could be mother of either spouse). |

Obituary | 3 January 1929 | 3 January 1929, Nelson, Nuckolls County, Nebraska, Nelson Gazette Obituary:. Susanna George was born at Moorestown, Penn., June 24, 1835. She was married to Amandus J. Koken September 27, 1856. To this union ten children were born, six of them surviving their mother: Mrs. E.C. Overton, Nelson; James Koken, Superior; Mrs. J.S. Swigart, Nora; Elmer F. Koken, Susanville, Calif.; H.S. Koken, Bird City, Kans.; and Mrs. A.E. Adamson, Bushnell, Nebr. The family moved to Nora in 1883, then to Nelson in 1905. The husband and father died in 1909, after which Sister Koken made her home with Mrs. Overton in Nelson, where she passed away December 31, 1928, at the unusual age of 93 years, 6 months and 7 days. Our departed sister was a member of the Lutheran church in her youth, but united with the Church of Christ at Nora thirty-six years ago, and later placed her membership in the Nelson Church of Christ, continuing a faithful member unto the last. She leaves to mourn her departure, six children, eighteen grand children and twenty-one great grand children, as well as old time friends and neighbors. The funeral was held from the Christian church in Nelson, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, the services being conducted by her pastor, the Rev. L.W. Myers. Mrs. Susanna Koken, Nelson's oldest citizen and probably the oldest woman in this section, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ellen C. Overton, early Monday morning. |
