Obituary18 August 190618 August 1906, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Recent Deaths: Mrs. Alonzo Davenport

Mrs. Sarah Davenport of New Bedford died at the home of Mrs. Ezra J. Barker on Broadway Sunday morning where she was visiting. Mrs. Davenport had not enjoyed the best of health for a long time, but was feeling exceptionally well after coming to Newport. Some hours previous to her death, she was taken with a distress spell. Being subject to these attacks, no especial alarm was felt at first, but she rapidly grew worse, and despite everything that could possibly be done for her she died after about twelve hours of suffering. Mrs. Davenport had endeared herself to her many friends by her bright and happy disposition and a wide circle of friends mourn her loss.

She was a native of Middletown, and the oldest of the seven children of the late Captain William Smith. Two sisters, Mrs. Henry Palmer of Stonington and Mrs. William J. Irish of Middletown, and two brothers, Mr. William P. Smith of Newport and Mr. Isaiah Smith of New York, survive, as well as a half-sister, Mrs. George Gratrix of Newport. Two sisters, Mrs. Joshua Brown of Newport and Mrs. Benjamin Howland of Middletown died many years ago.

Mrs. Davenport was twice married, her first husband being Mr. Hiram Barker, of Middletown, a brother of the late Ezra J. Barker. Four children were born to them. Two of them, Mrs. Charles G. Thompson and Mr. William J. Barker of New Bedford, are living, while the other two, Mrs. Fred Tanner and a younger child died some years ago. Mr. Davenport, to whom she was married in 1866, deceased some years since.

Funeral services were held from the residence of Mrs. Barker on Broadway, Rev. Dr. Quick of the Second Baptist Church officiating. The interment was in the family lot in the Middletown cemetery. The bearers were William P. Smith, a brother; William J. Barker, a son, and Charles G. Thompson and Frederick A. Tanner, sons-in-law.

Mrs. Harriet F. Palmer, widow of H.G. Palmer, died at the residence of a relative in Boston Sunday morning. Mrs. Palmer had not enjoyed good health for several months and never really recovered from the blow caused by the death of her husband for whom she always mourned.

Mrs. Palmer was daughter of Capt. William and Mrs. Sarah (Peckham) Smith. She was born in Newport, R. I. , March 9, 1836. Her father led a seafaring life and was master of a vessel before he was 21 years of age. He contracted yellow fever while his vessel, the Ellen Hayden, was at Charleston, S.C., and died there Nov. 18, 1850.

Mr. and Mrs. Palmer celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1905, and although they did not issue any formal invitations they were visited during the day by large numbers of their friends and were also the recipients of many beautiful and costly souvenirs of the occasion. They were married in Lebanon Sept. 6, 1855, by Rev. E. W. Tucker and in 1869 they removed to Lisbon. Mr. Palmer was always sought after as a town official, holding almost every office in the gift of his fellow residents. From Lisbon he removed to Stonington in 1877. Here he held many important offices. He became associate editor of the Westerly Tribune May 6, 1892 and afterward acted as local correspondent for The Day for Stonington and Mystic.

The body will be brought here today and funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm.
