Mrs. Harriet F. Palmer, widow of H.G. Palmer, died at the residence of a relative in Boston Sunday morning. Mrs. Palmer had not enjoyed good health for several months and never really recovered from the blow caused by the death of her husband for whom she always mourned.
Mrs. Palmer was daughter of Capt. William and Mrs. Sarah (Peckham) Smith. She was born in Newport, R. I. , March 9, 1836. Her father led a seafaring life and was master of a vessel before he was 21 years of age. He contracted yellow fever while his vessel, the Ellen Hayden, was at Charleston, S.C., and died there Nov. 18, 1850.
Mr. and Mrs. Palmer celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1905, and although they did not issue any formal invitations they were visited during the day by large numbers of their friends and were also the recipients of many beautiful and costly souvenirs of the occasion. They were married in Lebanon Sept. 6, 1855, by Rev. E. W. Tucker and in 1869 they removed to Lisbon. Mr. Palmer was always sought after as a town official, holding almost every office in the gift of his fellow residents. From Lisbon he removed to Stonington in 1877. Here he held many important offices. He became associate editor of the Westerly Tribune May 6, 1892 and afterward acted as local correspondent for The Day for Stonington and Mystic.
The body will be brought here today and funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm. |
