Dowley, at her home in Newton Center, Mass. Mr. Hazard was taken sick with pneumonia and he had suffered for years from a weak heart. He was the son of the late Charles H. and Sarah R. Hazard, and was in his 65th year. Mr. Hazard was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport, but had not attended recently, on account of loss of hearing.

The funeral took place from his alte home with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Daniel B. Hazard, at the Hazard homestead on Valley Road. The burial was in the Hazard lot in the Island Cemetery, Newport. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful.

Mr. Hazard is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Levi B. Dowley and Miss Maria B. Hazard, and his nieces, Misses Lois and Muriel Dowley, all of Newton Center, Mass., a niece, Mrs. Thomas B. Tanner of Newport, two nephews, Mr. Sydney Hazard of Valley Road and Mr. Ralph Hazard of Buzzard's Bay. His brother, Mr. Daniel Hazard, died about a year ago.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wilbur Nelson, pastor of the First Baptist John Clarke Memorial Church of Newport. The bearers were Messrs. George Irish, Harry and William Sherman, and Edward E. Peckham.

Death of Mrs. Thomas Molden

Mrs. Ellen McNamara Molden, widow of Thomas Molden, died at her home on Third Beach Road. She had been in poor health for some years. Mrs. Molden was in her eight-ninth year, and was born in Clyker, Ireland, and came to this country when about twenty years of age, with her brother. In 1860 she married Thomas Molden and to them were born Prescott Molden of this town, Edward Molden of New York, and John Crawford Molden, who resided with his mother. These three sons survive her, as do three grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Molden observed their golden wedding two years before the death of Mr. Molden, which occurred about 12 years ago.

The funeral took place on Monday at St. Columba's Berkeley Mrmorial Chapel, of which Mr. and Mrs. Molden were members. The rector, Rev. James H. S. Fair officiated. The interment was in the adjoining churchyard beside the grave of her husband.

Elmer Ellsworth Gifford died at his home on Marlborough street shortly after 8 o'clock Friday. Failing health forced him to take a rest last November, hoping he might regain his health, but he failed rapidly during the past few weeks.

Mr. Gifford was a native of Fall River, but came to Newport in 1886, where he has since resided. He entered the employ of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company in April 1892. ...42 years of service as conductor...

Besides his widow, Mrs. Esther A. Gifford, he leaves a son, Harold Sampson Gifford....The interment was in the Island Cemetery.

Was Last Child to be Born in "Whitehall;" Served as Tax Assessor; Funeral Services Friday

Chester Barker Brown, 67, of Green End Avenue, Middletown, a former president of the Town Council, died Tuesday afternoon at the Newport Hospital as the result of injuries he received last Wednesday afternoon in a fall from a load of hay onto a concrete platform. He had not regained consciousness.

The accident occurred while Mr. Brown was working at the barn on his farm. He was found unconscious by two boys who had been assisting him and he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

He was the last child to be born in "Whitehall", the Bishop Berkeley estate, where the Brown family lived for 110 years. He was born November 3, 1880, the eldest son of Nathan Barker and Lydia Ward Brown. He had been a farmer in the town all his life. He was a member of the Town Council from 1927 to 1931, then served as its persident from 1933 to 1935. He was a director of the Local Dairymen's Association (Providence) and he served from April 1928 to November 1931 on the Board of Tax Assessors of the town. He was long a member of the Board of Trustees of the Middletown Methodist Church, and a member of its official board.

He leaves three sisters, Mrs. Charles Carr, Miss Ida Brown and Miss Eleanor Brown, and a brother, Spencer F. Brown, all of Middletown.

Death of Stephen B. Congdon After a Long Illness

Mr. Stephen B. Congdon, who had been ill for the past three years, as the result of hardening of the artieries, died at his home, "Valley Farm," on Valley road, at an early hour Monday morning. He had been confined to bed for a year and a half.

Mr. Congdon was prominently known on the island. A son of Daniel and Anstiss (Battey) Congdon, he was born September 2, 1834, at the old John Battey farm, off the Ocean drive, Newport, and resided in that city until 1849, when with his father he removed to Middletown and engaged in farming. In 1852 he went to California, returning in 1854. Mr. Congdon united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the Four Corners in 1857 and was one of its oldest members.

He was three times married, the first marriage occurring in 1855, his wife being Abbie F. Chappelle of Wakefield, The second wife was Sarah Barker of Middletown, and his third wife, who was Miss Annie P. Smith of Middletown, survives him. He leaves one daughter, Lillie (Mrs. George Ward) of Brookline, Mass., and three grandchildren. He was the last of his family, his brother, Clark Henry Congdon having died in 1912 and another brother, Truman B. Congdon, some time earlier.

New Britain:

Edward E. Irish, 70, of 67 Ridgewood Street, this city, a resident of Hartford until five months ago, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in his home Thursday morning. A native of South Portsmouth, R. I., Mr. Irish went to Hartford to make his home in 1925 and while there he was employed by the Loomis Institute in Windsor.

According to his son, Raymond E. Irish, he and his father breakfasted together and a short time later the father went into his room. A shot was heard and the elder Mr. Irish was found on his bed, the revolver on a small bedside table, one shell empty. Dr. John Purney, medical examiner, found that death followed soon after the shot, and pronounced the case one of suicide. Mr. Irish has been in ill health recently. He leaves his wife and son.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home of B. C. Porter Sons and burial will be in Maple Cemetery, Berlin.

Irish of 51 Callender avenue, died at the Newport Hospital after a short illness. A native of Middletown, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Annie E. Sherman, and was educated in the town schools. She moved to Newport about 20 years ago and had been an active member of St. Paul's Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Raymond Irish, who lives in Connecticut; a sister, Mrs. George Wyatt, of Middletown, and three brothers, Charles A. Sherman of Middletown, Chester A. Sherman of Hope Valley and W. Ward Sherman of St. Petersburg, Fla. Another brother, Harry Sherman, died about a year ago.

Page 2: Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Sherman Irish of 51 Callender avenue, wife of the late Edward E. Irish, were conducted Thursday at the Hambly Funeral Home by the Rev. Harvey K. Mouseley, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Church. Mrs. Elmer Seibens was organist. Burial was in the Middletown Four Corners cemetery. Members of the family were bearers.
