Obituary | 31 March 1906 | 31 March 1906, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Middletown News: In the death of Miss Martha M. Smith, Middletown is again called upon to lay away one of its oldest residents, and one grown so familiar as to be known always as "Aunt Martha." Miss Smith was born at the Smith Homestead, 3d Beach Road, April 14, 1823 and spent her life here up to December 4 of last year, when, being in failing health, she was placed in the care of her niece, Mrs. John F. Peabody, where she died Monday morning, having laid for three days in an unconscious condition. Miss Smith was a woman of large sympathies and affection, as was well known in her devotion to her motherless nephews and nieces, whom she brought up and cared for until the time of their leaving home. Her long life of 83 years was one of fervent religious hope and trust and of willing service for others. She is survived by one brother, George Washington Smith, and by a number of nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home of her niece, Mrs. John F. Peabody, 3d Beach road, a large gathering filling the house. The services were conducted by Rev. J. Francis Cooper of Providence, her former pastor at the Methodist Episcopal Church where for many years she was a member, and by Rev. Latta Griswold of the Berkeley Memorial Chapel, where she had attended in more recent years. The bearers were two of her former near neighbors, Mr. Abram A. Brown and Mr. Joseph Chase, and Mr. George Calvert and Mr. Christopher S. Peckham. Miss Smith was laid in the Middletown Cemetery at the Four Corners. |

Death | 1908 | He died in 1908 I am very puzzled with the records for George and his wife. The name Orrel Amanda Shumway is distinctive, I would be surprised to find another one who also married a George W. Smith. That would be quite a coincidence. However, George and Orrel are in the Middletown, R.I. census, and George, a widower, is in the 1880 Middletown, R.I. census -- both times with Orrel's sister Irene Shumway living in the household. Therefore, can it be correct that Orrel died in 1872 in Eaton, OH? And on Findagrave, Orrel's spouse is listed as George W. Smith, 1832 - 1856. And it says he was born in Eaton, OH. The 1870 Preble County, OH census does not show an Orrel Amanda Smith, even though she was supposedly buried there 2 years later. And the 1850 Preble County, OH census does not list a George W. Smith. |
Newspaper Mention | 24 October 1908 | The 24 October 1908 edition of the Newport Mercury, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, reported Middletown News: Estate of George W. Smith. Mary J. Smith offers for probate his will and asks for letters testamentary on his estate, she being named as Executrix. Will and petition are referred to the November court and notice directed to be given. |
