Millard Fillmore Smith died at the an early hour Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William E. Whitman, on Paradise Avenue, Middletown. Although in his eighty-third year and having suffered a severe automobile accident last August, he had been in unusually good health until he sustained a shock, April 30, from which he never rallied.
Born January 23, 1849, the oldest son of William and Mary (Barker) Smith, he spent his entire life in Middletown, residing on Paradise Avenue and attending the public schools. He married Mary Frances Ward, who died about two years ago. Mr. Smith was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Middletown, being the oldest male member at the time of his death. He took an active interest in all church affairs, was a regular attendant at its services, a member of the Official Board and a trustee.
He is survived by three children, Robert W. Smith of Newport and Mrs. Walter S. Barker and Mrs. William E. Whitman of Middletown, and five grandchildren Misses Margaret and Frances Smith of Newport, Mrs. Alfred Molden, Miss Elizabeth Whitman and William Whitman of Middletown. |

Mrs. Irene Louise Smith, wife of Charles Henry Sisson, died suddenly at the Newport Hospital on Sunday morning. She had been in her usual health, but when her husband reached home Saturday afternoon he found her unconscious. She was taken to the Newport Hospital, but she never regained consciousness, and died at an early hour on Sunday.
Mrs. Sisson was of a quiet disposition and was well liked, having a large number of friends. She was the youngest of five children of the late George Washington and Orel Amanda (Shumway) Smnith, and was born at the Smith homestead on Third Beach Road. On New Year's Day, 34 years ago, she was united in marriage with Charles Henry Sisson, and to them was born one son, Warren Sisson of Newport.
She was a member of the Berkeley Memorial Chapel and was greatly interested in whatever was being given by the Guild, although not a member.
She is survived by her husband, son, a granddaughter and a sister, Mrs. Mary Peabody, and two brothers, Nathan and Charles Smith, both of this town. The funeral was held on Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Berkeley Memorial Chapel with Rev. James H. S. Fair officiating. The floral tributes were beautiful. |

Smith of Middletown, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning at her home on Paradise avenue, death being the result of heart trouble. Mrs. Smith has been suffering from heart trouble for some time, having a severe attack in the fall, but recently she seemed to be in good health, having attended church two Sundays previous to her death.
The deceased was the daughter of Jacob and Harriet Ward, having been born May 6, 1854, on Paradise avenue, where she lived her entire life. She attended the schools of the town and in December, 1874, married Millard F. Smith, by whom she is survived.
She is also survived by a son, Mr. Robert W. Smith of Newport, who because of illness was unable to be at his mother's bedside, and also by two daughters, Mrs. Walter S. Barker and Mrs. William Whitman, both of Middletown. Five grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Smith was taken very ill at 1:30 Sunday morning. The doctor was summoned, but nothing could be done except to relieve the suffering. Her daughters were also called and were with their mother when she died one hour later.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Middletown Methodist Episcopal Church for 62 years, having also been a member of the Ladies Aid and the missionary societies of that church. |
