Biography

Birth7 December 1789Ruth Coggeshall was born on 7 December 1789 in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island. The Coggeshall Genealogy says that Ruth was the daughter of Josiah's first wife, Mary (widow of Mr. Horswell). It does not give a date, and since they were married less than 10 years, from Oct 1776 to some time before his second marriage in Nov. 1786, she would be squeezed into the time between Josiah in May of 1782 and Pearce H., in March of 1785.

However, her Findagrave entry, in Middletown Cemetery, lists her birth date as 7 Dec 1789. That would mean that her mother was Josiah's second wife, Mrs. Hannah Weaver, the widow of Benoni Weaver.

Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island, Vol 3, p. 2144, says that Ruth was the daughter of Thomas Coggeshall.

I have not found this family in Arnold's Vital Records.1,2

Biography

Birth1777Abraham Brown was born in 1777 in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island. Something is wrong with the dates, if Abraham was the son of Gideon Jr and Sarah. Either Abraham was born later, or Gideon was born earlier.1
Marriageabout 1807He and Ruth Coggeshall were married about 18072
Residence1813As of 1813 Abraham lived at White Hall Farm, Berkeley Avenue, in Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island, Whitehall was built by Dean Berkeley in 1729, and in 1731, he deeded it to Yale. For many years, the farmhouse was leased to various tavern keepers. It was used by the British for billeting troops during the Revolution.

In 1813, Abraham Brown bought the leasehold, and his heirs held it until the 1940's. By 1897, the fourth generation of Browns moved to a new house they built up the lane, and the old house fell into disrepair. It was later purchased by three Newport women who repaired it and gave it to the Colonial Dames of Rhode Island. In 1970 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it is opened on a limited basis for tours during the summer.
