Obituary | 26 December 1947 | 26 December 1947, Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, Hartford Courant Obituary:. Stamford: W.J. Willson Killed by Car in Stamford Greenwich Official Believed Victim of Hit-and-Run Driver The body of William Jay Willson, 74, widely known Greenwich public official, was found Christmas Eve beside Long Ridge Road where he apparently had been struck by a hit-and-run automobile. Willson, visiting a niece, Mrs. Frederick J. Ferguson, left her home about 7:30 p.m. to purchase a bottle of cream at a store. When he failed to return, the family became worried and telephoned the store. A clerk found his body lying beside the highway. Dr. Ralph Crane, medical examiner, said the injuries indicated Willson had been struck by an automobile. Willson suffered a fractured skull, fractures of both legs and an arm. Detective Frederick Blundell and Patrolman William Herman of the Stamford town police started an investigation. Willson, a native of Rye, N.Y., served as superintendent of the Greenwich Water Company for many years, retiring in 1937. He later was appointed superintendent of sewers for the town of Greenwich, and his retirement from that post was to have become effective January 1. He was a past president of the Greenwich Rotary Club, a past president of the Greenwich Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and was active in the Masonic order. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Florence Close Willson, three nieces and a nephew. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Christ Church, Greenwich. Burial will be in Putnam Cemetery. |

Newspaper Mention | 4 October 1900 | The 4 October 1900 edition of the Port Chester Journal, Port Chester, Westchester County, New York, reported Greenwich News: The election of James G. Willson as First Selectman was not wholly unexpected. With the withdrawal of Mr. J. Albert Lockwood, it was confidently believed that he would have a fair chance of election, although Mr. N. A. Knapp was considered a strong opponent. Although the Second Selectman under Mr. Lockwood, Mr. Willson had escaped all censure or criticism from the investigation committee or those who were fighting those in office. This was Mr. Willson's strong recommendation to the voters, and the result shows that he ran like a race horse though his party was nominally in the minority. We have known Mr. Willson from a boy up, and have never heard a word uttered to his discredit. We believe that he will make an excellent official. |
