About a year and a half ago he suffered a paralytic stroke and since then had been confined to his house, his condition steadily growing worse and finally culminating in his death. Mr. Tilley was at one time one of the best known residents of the city. He was descended from an old Newport family, being a son of the late Thomas S. Tilley who was for many years sheriff of Newport county. Early in life he went in California and remained there for several years. During the civil was he served in the pay department and after its close became a member of Char. E. Lawton Post, G.A.R., of this city. He was also a member of Rhode Island Lodge and Aquidneck Encampment, I.O.O.F., and has held office in both bodies. He was at one time deputy sheriff and had also occupied the office of probate clerk. He was three times married. A widow and four children survive him, Thomas S. Percy, and Laura G. Tilley of this city and Mrs. J. Oscar Peckham of Middletown. |
