Father | Leonard Tilley (b. about 1720) |
Son | Ludric Tilley+ (b. about 1760, d. 23 February 1826) |
Speculation | Hammett Tilley says that Leonard himself left Brooklyn and went to Granby. Perhaps that was after Alexander was grown, and even married. I am estimating Leonard's birth about 1720, Alexander's about 1745. Which doesn't give time for Ludric to be born by 1760 but could just be squeezed to 1763 or 4. And a birthdate of 1720 for Leonard seems odd when Hammett Tilley gives his brother Samuel's birth year as 1740 in Brooklyn. If Leonard was really born in Brooklyn NY -- was John married in Boston? Or in Brooklyn? William the cousin, being a rope-maker, might have had connections with shipping, and perhaps John went to sea, and ended up on Long Island? Another point of interest, there is a family of Tilley's in Oyster Bay, Long Island. They are buried in the Tilley Cemetery, Locust Valley, Long Island. Their family papers are archived at NYU Library, Center for Brooklyn History, call No. 1986.057. The father seems to be George. One of the sons, David, evidently born 1729, d. 1825. I don't see any connection, but Oyster Bay is near Brooklyn, so it is worth keeping in mind. The name Luddrick -- reading listings of the Dutch reformed church, with Hendrick and similar names, gave me the idea that Alexander might have married a Dutch woman in New York/Brooklyn. Or could Leonard BE Alexander? That seems far-fetched also. Ludric did name his oldest son Leonard. | |
Birth | about 1745 | Alexander Tilley was born about 1745. |
History Note | 1768 | In 1768 in Granby, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, the following event took place: Granby was established in 1768 from South Hadley and was known there as the Second Parish. Rev. Mr. Backus was for many years the pastor of Second Parish. Mr. Woodbridge was the pastor of South Hadley, before the split and after for some time. I went through all the Town Meeting minutes of S. Hadley from the beginning to 1769, after the split. There were several Hillyer's -- Timothy, Joseph, John. In 1731 the taxable inhabitants of South Hadley numbered 37, Granby 8. (Everts, p. 543). In 1727 an additional tract was added to the area considered Granby, 4 miles long and 2 wide, called "The Crank". Everts says the first settlers moved into the Granby area in 1727, including Ebenezer Taylor (Jerusha Taylor's grandfather). Everts lists settlers through 1763, and does not list Tilley. He does list Ezekiel Barton, David Barton, Ebenezer Bartlett, and Elisha Barton, the names surrounding Alexander "Truly" in the tax lists. He also lists a Joseph Hillyer. Everts gives a list of men "who had the largest estates in Granby" in 1771, and the list included Jacob Taylor (Jerusha's father).1 |
Tax List | 1784 | Alexander appeared on the tax list of in Granby, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, in 1784. This is the first Tax List for Granby. It is about 5 pages long, and at the end it says "A Tax of Assessment on the Town of Granby for the year 1784 to Repair the Highway and to Support Bridges Made by us. Granby 16 of April 1784. Experience Smith, Josiah Montague, Reuben Moody, Assessors of Granby." The names are not alphabetical, so perhaps they are listed geographically. Near the bottom of the first page is an entry which could be Alexander Tilley. It looks like Alexander Truley. As in the 1790 census, he is listed with Bartons and Bartletts. 5 entries further, at the top of the next column, is "Luderick Hilliard". Ludric was not married until 1786. As in the 1790 census, he is listed with numerous Taylors: Jacob, Ithamar, Samuel, Shubal, Bennoni. I can't read the column headings. The last 4 columns seem to be Rates, and Alexander does not have any. There are some others who do not have any, such as Elijah Butterfield, John Montague, David Nash, but most of the entries have Rates in both sets of columns. The first column *may* say "Improved acres" and then perhaps the second column is "Unimproved acres." This is from the Massachusetts, US, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988, Granby, Tax Lists on Ancestry.com. |
Tax List | 1785 | Alexander appeared on the tax list of in Granby, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, in 1785. Again, this tax list is difficult to read, but see the characteristic d for the end of Alexander. It seems that the first letter of the names is hidden in the crease. It looks like Alexander Truley. It is the same amount of property as 1784: 1,1,6, where 1784 was 1,1,4,2. And the same as 1784, no rates listed. The 1785 list is alphabetical. Ludric is again listed as Luderick Hilliard. |
Census | 1790 | He appeared in the census 1790 in Granby, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Alexander is listed as: "Alex'dr Truely" 1 male over 16 1 male under 16 3 females In between Bartons and Bartlett's: David Barton and David Barton, Jr., and Ebenezer and Oliver Bartlet. A few families above "Ludr'k Hilliard 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 2 females. Truely is not Tilley, and also, in this census (as well as the 1790 Tax List) Ludric's surname is given as "Hilliard". |
Research Note | 1798 | 1798. Alexander is not found on the 1798 Tax List. The following Bartons and Bartletts are listed, the names found around him in earlier lists. Reuben Barton, 1 Lot Supposed to be in the Crank. Simon Barton, 1 Farm Bounded South on the Road Ezekiel Barton, 1 Farm Bounded south on the County Road 1 Lot Bounded North on the Road 1 Lot in or by the Great Meadow David Barton, 1 Farm separated by the Highway only Titus Bartlet, 1 Farm, bounded south on the County Road Asahel Bartlett, 1 Farm Bounded East on the County road Aaron Bartlett, 1 Lot Bounded West on the Crank Highway Oliver Bartlet, 1 Farm Separated only by the County Road |

Tilley died at her residence at the corner of Rhode Island avenue and Hope street on Wedensday after being in failing health for a long time. She was in her eighty-sixth year, and death was due to the infirmities of age. She was a woman of unusual intelligence and in her younger days had a wide circle of friends with whom she was always welcome. Advancing years, however, had kept her closely confined to the house of late and for the last few months she had failed steadily. The death of her only son, Mr. R. Hammett Tilley, was a severe blow to her. Mrs. Tilley was a daughter of the late Edward Easton and Rebecca Chapman Taylor of Newport, and married the late Benjamin C. Tilley on December 2, 1844. Mr. Tilley died in 1886 and she had made her home with her son,Mr. R.H. Tilley, until his death. |

Obituary | 20 August 1910 | 20 August 1910, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Mr. R. Hammett Tilley died at his residence on Hope street on Tuesday after a considerable illness from Bright's disease. He had been a sufferer for a long time, but had managed to keep at his duties at the Newport Historical Society until June when he was obliged to give up his active work. Since that time he had been confined to his home, and although his condition had apparently improved at times, he had failed steadily for the last week until the end came. Mr. Tilley was one of the best versed men in the State on historical or genealogical topics. For more than 25 years he had been librarian of the Newport Historical Society, an office that brought him into contact with thousands of people interested in the history of Newport and of Rhode Island. When the office of State Record Commissioner was created in 1896 he was at once selected to fill that office, a position that he had since retained. His conduct of that office was marked by efficiency and economy, and had received high commendation from all who had relations with the office. As librarian of the Historical Society he was efficient and courteous, ready to help anyone in search of information and drawing freely upon his vast store of information for the benefit of all who desired it. The large collection of records and valuable papers owned or in the custody of the Society was kept in excellent condition and so arranged as to be convenient for ready reference. The value of the society to the general public was due in large measure to Mr. Tilley. Risbrough Hammett Tilley was the son of Mary Chapman (Taylor) and the late Benjamin James Tilley and was born in this city on September 1, 1850. His father was engaged in the conduct of a periodical store on Thames street, and after the young man had received his education in Miss Nichols' school on Marlboro street, known as the White Horse Tavern, he entered the store and was employed there until his father's death. He subsequently carried on the business alone for a few years, afterward engaging in research work on historical and genealogical matters. After his election as librarian of the Newport Historical Society most of his time was devoted to his duties there, but he found time to publish genealogical works relating to the Tilley and Taylor families and also to edit several historical magazines, including the Newport Historical Magazine, The American Genealogical Queries and the Magazine of New England History. He founded the historical and genealogical department of the Mercury and edited it for a time, later relinquishing this duty to his daughter, Miss Edith May Tilley. He was the first registrar of the Sons of the Revolution in Rhode Island, a position that he retained until his death, and had also been registrar of the Rhode Island Society of Colonial Wars. He was formerly a member of several of the local Masonic organizations, but withdrew from all of them a few years ago. Mr. Tilley leaves a widow, who was a daughter of Frederick A. Barlow, and one daughter, Miss Edith M. Tilley. His mother, Mrs. Mary Taylor Tilley, who celebrated her eighty-fifth birthday on June 24, also survives him. Funeral services were held from his late residence on Hope street Friday afternoon and were largely attended. |

Obituary | 22 July 1938 | 22 July 1938, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Miss Edith M. Tilley Died Monday Morning Historical Society Librarian Fails to Rally from Coma Authority on Genealogy Taken to Hospital Sunday, Had been in Poor Health Recently Miss Edith May Tilley, member of a prominent Newport family, librarian of the Newport Historical Society, founder of the Sunshine Society, and an authority on genealogy, died Monday morning at the Newport Hospital. Miss Tilley had not been in the best of health for sometime, but continued her duties at the Historical Society until recently. She was taken to the Newport Hospital Sunday, and sank into a coma from which she failed to rally. Miss Tilley was a native of Newport, a daughter of the late R. Hammett and Susan Barlow Tilley. She was active in various organizations before she left Newport to take up genealogical work in Boston, and after she returned to the Historical Society here in 1936. Miss Tilley, recognizing the value of the mural paintings found behind paneling at the Vernon House on Clarke street, was instrumental in the movement for their restoration. Miss Tilley, who became an assistant to her father, then librarian of the Historical Society, after her graduation from Rogers High School, was elected to his poistion after his death in 1910. She continued her work here until 1917 when she resigned to pursue genealogical studies in Boston until 1936 when she was again elected librarian of the local society after Lloyd M. Mayer died. Following in her father's steps in his chosen avocation of genealogist, Miss Tilley won recognition in 1932 in "Who's Who in Genealogy" as one of the leading genealogists of the country and gained, thereby, access to the National Genealogical Clearing House with affiliations in 1331 counties of the United States and 16 foreign countries. Miss Tilley became interested in this work at an early age and had been of much assistance to Newporters seeking genealogical backgrounds as required for membership in patriotic organizations. Miss Tilley was a past regent of William Ellery Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and had represented the local chapter at national meetings. In addition, she had been closely affiliated with a number of organizations of a similar type, as well as the Sunshine Society, which she founded in 1903, and the Current Topics Club. She leaves an aunt, Miss Lydia A. Barlow of this city, a sister of Miss Tilley's mother and the last surviving member of that family. The funeral was held from the Hambly funeral home to Trinity Church Wednesday afternoon, with many members of the organizations here and out-of-town, with which she was affiliated, present. The Protestant Episcopal Church ritual was read by the Rev. Stanley C. Hughes, the rector. The honorary bearers were Dr. Stephen B. Luce, president, and John H. Hodgson, John Howard Benson and William R. Harvey, officers and directors of the Historical Society. Many friends attended the funeral and sent flowers. Interment was in the family plot in the Island cemetery. Miss Tilley was an honorary member of Colonel William Barton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and one of the founders of the chapter. Members who attended the funeral were Mrs. Oliver Cushman, regent; Mrs. Joseph West, Mrs. Joseph Barker, Miss Evelyn Chase, Miss Harriet Sanford, Mrs. Arthur Smith, Mrs. Archibald Alty, Miss Ruth White and Mrs. Philip Caswell, past state regent. William Ellery Chapter, of which Miss Tilley was a former regent and former state vice regent, was represented by Mrs. George G. Wilbour, regent, and approximately 25 of the members, Hope Branch, International Sunshine Society, which Miss Tilley founded, was represented by the president, Mrs. Herbert Adams, and many members. During the service, the Newport Historical Society and the Wanton-Lyman_Hazard House was closed. |
