Biography

Research NoteThere are several databases on RootsWeb which show Allen Roden's wife as Patsy Martha Weathers, b. 1803 in Warren County, KY. That is the correct birth year for this Martha, but the data given in the RootsWeb databases (probably all copied from one of them) does not jive with the census records. It almost looks as if the compiler had put children from several families together. Therefore I am only showing the children I see in the census, and perhaps Martha Roden is not Martha Weathers.

Obituary1 December 19601 December 1960, Auburn City, Placer County, California, Auburn Journal Obituary:. Arthur Millert Sather of Auburn passed away at his home at 1311 Lincoln Way last Monday morning. He had been in ill health recently.

Sather was 70 years of age, a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He came to Auburn in 1909.

For many years, he was a restaurant owner here, operating Sather's Grill. He had been retired since 1954.

Sather was a member of the Tahoe Club and the Auburn Elks Lodge. He was one of the organizers of the Auburn Ski Club, and was a director of the Placer Savings and Loan Association.

Art Sather was one of Auburn's best known and best liked citizens. His entire life was devoted to his family and the assistance of any worthwhile project. His career in the restaurant business started in 1909 when he owned and operated a "Chop House" in what is now downtown Auburn. He was among the first to move to "Uptown" Auburn and for many years owned and operated what was known as Sather's Grill, a place which became famous throughout the state for hospitality of the owner. After World War II he sold the business which is now known as the Sierra Club.

After selling Sather's Grill, he operated the Cozy Spot on the old highway between Auburn and Newcastle for several years and when selling that business he retired to private life, except for his duties as a director of the Savings and Loan Association, spending much of the summer at his Lake Tahoe property and the rest of the time at his home on Lincoln Way in Auburn.

Art Sather was always interested in amateur sports of every kind. Many years ago he organized the Auburn Athletic Club which functioned for a time in Downtown Auburn. Auburn city baseball teams, Soccer teams, and Sportsman Clubs always found Sather a financial contributor as well as actual participant. He always supported high school and college athletic teams and during the championship days of the Auburn Cub town basketball team he was one of the ardent supporters, who aided in keeping that team on the front pages of the area metropolitan sports pages.

He was an active member of the Lord Sholto Douglas Chapter of E Clampus Vitus of Auburn, and always served as an active committee member on the Gold Rush Revival executive group.

Art Sather's passing will be mourned by all who knew him as one the Auburn's most outstanding citizens. The sympathy of the city goes to his devoted wife and children.

He leaves his wife, Goldie J. Sather of Auburn, a son, Edward M. Sather of San Jose, two daughters, Emaline Snyder of Pilot Hill, Mabel Sathers of Auburn, four grandchildren and three [?] great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 pm in the Cahpel of the Hills with Rev. Albert [unreadable] officiating. Burial will be in the Auburn cemetery. Teh family invites contributions the the cancer fund in lieu of flowers.
