Mentioned in 1810 as 'of New Haven', a certain 'Henry Mead, physician' appeared in the New York directory for 1816-17. This was the alleged maker of a solitary all-white vase [Plate 19, Clement's Own Pioneer Potters] on the evidence of a paper label: Finished in New York 1816. A little late then, 'In 1819 the manufacture of Porcelain . . . was commenced in New York by Dr. H. Mead' [J. Leander Bishop, History of American Manufactures]. Obituary	3 March 1843	3 March 1843, Obituary:. (excerpted from the Journal of Commerce) "Fate of Genius. The Coroner held an inquest on Monday, at the New York City Hospital, on the body of Dr. Henry Mead, aged 65, a native of Connecticut. The deceased was formerly Alderman of the Tenth Ward, and afterwards Collector of the Thirteenth Ward. He had been a man of wealth and fashion, (to use his own words) a practising physician in this city, a man of genius and enterprize, being the first who ever manufactured porcelain or china ware in this country, which he commenced at Jersey City, the first who ever made pins here, and the first who ever refined camphor, in this country. He had lost his wife some four years ago, she having been drowned in a cellar. He had become greatly reduced in circumstances and was very destitute. He went to the City Hospital on Friday to lodge. He became delirious and was attacked with convulsions on Saturday, refused medicines, and died about 3 o'clock on Sunday morning. A post mortem examination was executed by Dr. Wetherspoon, and the jury found that the deceased died of inflamation of the brain."
