The farmer, Ralph Garnsey, 40, of the Woods Road, Town of Clarendon, visited the home of William Brooks, the town superintendent of highways, to collect $15 for shoveling the road from his home to the County Line Road. An argument was said to have resulted with Garnsey arrested for third degree assault for allegedly striking and injuring Brooks who was treated by a physician for face lacerations and a sprainged ankle. Arraigned before Peace Justice Daniel E. Beadle, Garnsey pleaded guilty to the charge. |
Family History | August 1950 | In August 1950. From Mabel's Findagrave entry: "Ralph & Mabel's house was totally destroyed by a kitchen stove fire in August of 1950, leaving the family homeless for a time, with 8 of the 15 children still living at home at the time." |
Newspaper Mention | 24 August 1950 | The 24 August 1950 edition of the Daily Messenger, Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, reported Fire Makes 10 Flee from Home Near Clifton Spa Ralph Garnsey Family Is Being Aided by Neighbors Neighbors of a Clifton Springs family are marshaling aid for the couple and eight of their children who lost their home and all belongings in a fire yesterday afternoon. The blaze destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Garnsey on the Short road, four miles north of Clifton Springs. Started by an exploding oil stove, the flames were already shooting through the roof of the structure when Fire Chief Vernon Sanford arrived. Sanford and Mrs. Garnsey carried the children to safety. Garnsey, father of 15, said later that all the children were given a place to live for the time being. Living at home with them were four daughters: Mable, 3; Ethel, 4; Sandra, 8; and mary, 11, and four sons, William, 2; James, 5; John, 7, and Kenneth, 9. According to the Garnseys, the house was partially covered by insurance. He said that all children will be cared for at the present time, but with the loss of all furniture and clothing, he was unable to say what his next move would be. The Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester has donated lumber. Two Rochesterians have offered a check for $100 each to help supplement the loss. Anyone having furniture or household goods or clothing is asked to notify the Rev. John DeLand, pastor of Clifton Springs Gospel Church, or call Clifton Springs 120-R. Mr. and Mrs. Garnsey are staying for the present in a small outbuilding on the property, which was not damaged by the fire. |
Newspaper Mention | 30 August 1950 | The 30 August 1950 edition of the Daily Messenger, Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, reported Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Garnsey and family whose home four miles north of Clifton Springs was totally destroyed by fire last Wednesday, are now living south of the village in the home formerly occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Haskell and family. John S. DeLand, pastor of the Gospel Chapel, states that the family have been well supplied with furniture, food and clothing. |
Newspaper Mention | 19 March 1953 | The 19 March 1953 edition of the Daily Messenger, Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, reported Sixty days in Ontario County Jail were given a 47-year-old Port Gibson man who last week was arrested for assault third degree. Ralph Garnsey was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Arthur Scammell after his wife, Mrs. Mabel Garnsey, complained that he beat and forced her out of their home. Garnsey admitted the assault charge when he was arraigned before Peace Justice N.E. Richardson, Town of Manchester. |
Newspaper Mention | 25 June 1953 | The 25 June 1953 edition of the Democrat and Chronicle, Rochester, Monroe County, New York, reported Newark: A Port Gibson mother and her six children narrowly escaped asphyxiation from carbon monoxide fumes late Tuesday night when they were driving home from a picnic. Mrs. Ralph Garnsey said she and her six children had attended a picnic in East Williamson and as she was driving through Marion one of her children started to cry. She drove on to Palmyra where another daughter, Ethel, 6, began to sob. Mrs. Garnsey then sped to the Newark Hospital when it appeared that her children were suffering from an unknown ailment. When she arrived at the hospital a son, James, 8, opened the car door and fell to the pavement. John, 11, carried his 4-year-old brother, William, into the hospital. Mrs. Garnsey and John were the only ones who did not suffer any ill effects from the poisonous fumes. Ethel was unconscious when she was brought into the hospital and was given artificial respiration by Mrs. Carolyn White of Marion, a registered nurse. Mabel was in a semi-conscious state and did not remember being carried into the hospital by her mother. Ethel was placed under an oxygen tent provided by the Newark Faire Department. She was kept in the hospital overnight but was removed to her home yesterday morning by her mother. The other five Garnsey children were released to their home after receiving a medical checkup Tuesday night. The other Garnsey child was Sandra, 11, who sat in the back seat with Mabel and Ethel who had pulled a blanket over them. Mrs. Garnsey had observed that the back seat had been pulled out. A garage attendant told her that there was a hole under the seat and one in the exhuast pipe when she took her car to a Newark garage for a check-up. Mrs. Garnsey said the alertness of Mrs. White in administering artificial respiration to Ethel probably saved the little girl's life. She said doctors told her that her family had a "close call." |
