Newspaper Mention | 27 September 1889 | The 27 September 1889 edition of the Stamford Advocate, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, reported An Outrageous Assault One of the most outrageous assaults recorded in the criminal annals of Connecticut was reported to Deputy Sheriff Bolster on Sunday from Long Ridge in this town. It appears that Mrs. Walter Wilson lives alone in a small house near the village named. Her husband, who formerly worked inthe Cove Mills, has been dead some years, and she has an adult son working in Stamford and employed at Lounsbury and Soule's shoe factory. Saturday night a man whom she has identified as Charles Green, broke into the house in spite of what the circumstances show to have been a vigourous resistance on the part of the old lady, who is about 75 years of age. Succeeding in getting into the house, the unspeakably villainous monster made a violent assault upon the feeble old woman. Dr. Geib says she bears the marks of heavy blows on her face and breast; some of her teeth were broken and there were lacerations in the roof of her mouth, as if the villain's finger nails had torn the flesh. Mrs. Wilson's own story discloses still other and more dastardly features of the assault. When her assailant finally retired from the premises, Mrs. Wilson managed to crawl to the house of the nearest neighbors some distance off, and related to their horrified ears the piteous tale she had to tell, emphasized as it was by the blood and mire on her person -- visible evidences of the ruffian's brutality. They assisted her home and remained with her all night, and later other neighbors joined with them in ministering to the aged victim's necessities. Sunday morning Mrs. Wilson's son in Stamford heard of the affair by a messenger from the Ridge, who also notified Sheriff Bolster, who, accompanied by officer Daniel Hickey, drove up to the place, and on the information of Mrs. Wilson herself, arrested Charles Green (colored) aged 26. Green was brought to the house and she identified him positively as the man who did the deed. Green was found at the home of his aunt in the near neighborhood of the crime. He denies the charge. The trial will come off before the Borough Court of Stamford, as soon as the principal witness for the prosecution can appear. Meanwhile the prisoner is safely behind the bars at Bridgeport. Mrs. Wilson's injuries, especially the laceration of her mouth and tongue, were inflicted while her assailant was endeavoring to prevent her outcries. He struck her with his clenched fist many times and choked her unmercifully. Once he caught her by the tongue and made a threat that if she did not stop that -- i.e., her attempts to call for help -- he would tear the member loose from her head, and so far carried out his threat that the blood flowed in a stream from the laceration, the carpet being saturated with gore, and presenting a sight that chilled the blood in the veins of the many spectators who saw it Sunday morning. Charles Bouton drove to Stamford in the early part of Sunday, and informed Sheriff Bolster and others. That officer lost no time in going for Green, and brought him first to the bedside of the victim, who positively identified him as her assailant. Mrs. Wilson is now attended daily by Dr. Prior. The alleged Perpetrator of the crime, Chas. B. Green, has been living in the vicinity, off and on for the past three years, doing but little work, and bearing not the best of characters from all accounts. He is about 26 years of age. |
