Research Note | 1774 | 1774 Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. There is a marriage listed on 14 Jul 1774 for a Benjamin Wilson and Betsy Beard, Second Congregational Church.2 |
Newspaper Mention | 13 October 1774 | The 13 October 1774 edition of the Rivington's New York Gazetteer, New York reported RYE, September 24, 1774: We the subscribers, freeholders and inhabitants of the town of Rye, in the County of Westchester, being much concerned with the unhappy situation of public affairs, think it our duty to our King and country to declare, that we have not been concerned in any resolutions entered into, or measures taken, with regard to the disputes at present subsisting with the mother country: we also testify our dislike to many hot and furious proceedings, in consequence of said disputes, which we think are more likely to ruin this once happy country, than remove grievances, if any there are. We also declare our great desire and full resolution to live and die peaceable subjects to our gracious sovereign King George the third, and his laws." This statement was very controversial, and many reversals and counter-statements, and retractions, were published as time went on. The list of the undersigned, however, is very useful for a list of a good percentage of the Rye residents of 1774. Concerning the Wilson family, the following Wilsons signed the statement: Joseph Nehemiah Thomas Benjamin I do not know which Wilsons these are, and will continue to sort them out. |
Census | 1790 | He appeared in the census 1790 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Benjamin is listed as: 1 male age 16 and over, 1 male under 16, 3 females. Therefore the head of household, presumably Benjamin, was born before 1774.3 |
Tax List | 1795 | Benjamin appeared on the tax list of in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, in 1795. with only three entries: Horse kind 2 years old (and this entry is lighter than those around it, it is possible that it was erased), 15 Acres Clear Pasture, 15 acres Bush Pasture [or Brush pasture? but it looks clearly like Bush), for a tax of 7 Pounds, 10 shillings. This is one of the lower tax listings.4 |

Note | This is completely speculative. I am researching this family to see if these are Sarah's parents, but at this time I have no proof. The possibility is based on the two families living next to each other for several generations.
Birth | about 1757 | Nehemiah Wilson, Jr., was born about 1757. In his pension application, it states "On this 26th day of July, 1820...appeared in open Court Nehemiah Willson, aged Sixty three years."1,2 |
Marriage | 6 November 1786 | He and Rachel Avery were married on 6 November 1786 In Rachel's pension application as the widow of Nehemiah, her representative states "She declares that her maiden name was Rachel Avery, that she was married to the said Nehemiah Wilson on the 6th day of November in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty-six by the Rev'd. Isaac Lewis, then pastor of the Second Congregational Society in said Greenwich."3,2 |
Census | 1790 | He appeared in the census 1790 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Nehemiah is listed as: "Jun'r", with 1 male 16 and older, and 3 females. Neighbors Nathaniel Mead, Jr., Joseph Mead, Smith Mead, Henry Mead, Matthew Mead, Benjamin Wilson, Nehemiah Mead, Jr. Rev. Isaac Lewis. Nehemiah is probably about 25 here, probably married about 4 years, born say 1766.4 |
Occupation | Nehemiah worked as a Tailor. This is based on his Pension Application, in which he states: " And I do further declare that my occupation is that of a Taylor, That from impaired eye sight I am unable to work at my trade."2
Tax List | 1795 | Nehemiah appeared on the tax list of in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, in 1795. Nehemiah has a 1 under the first category "Poles from 21 to 70 years." [Perhaps fencing?] He has a 1 under Acres Plowland, and a tax of 18 Pounds. This is quite a low tax compared to many of the other listings.5 |
Census | 1800 | He appeared in the census 1800 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Nehemiah is listed as: Nehemiah Wilson, 1 male under 10 years, 1 male 26-44, 4 females under 10, 1 female 10-15 (If Nehemiah is Sarah (Wilson) Mead's father, she could fall into this age range.) 1 female 26-44. Therefore the head of household was born between 1756 and 1774. Neighbors, Nathaniel Mead, Jr., Nathaniel Mead 5th, Benjamin Wilson, Nehemiah Mead, Rev. Isaac Lewis, John Wilmot. Near 2nd Congregational in Greenwich village. Image 11/14 on Ancestry.6 |
Witness | 8 October 1800 | He witnessed the will of John Purdy on 8 October 1800 in Rye, Westchester County, New York. I do not know if this will refers to this Nehemiah.7 |
Census | 1810 | Nehemiah Wilson, Jr., appeared in the census 1810 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Nehemiah is listed as: Nehe Willson age 26-44, with 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 female under 10 and 1 female 26-44. This Nehemiah still lives in the same neighbor group with Seeley Mead, Jef Negro (probably Jeffrey Felmette), Ben. Willson, Nath'l Mead, Doct'r Lewis and Thos. Mead. (Also Amos Willson, 6 names below Doct'r Lewis.) So presumably this census record is recorded on the correct Nehemiah, but all 4 of the females who were under 10 in 1800 are gone. There is still one female under 10, who could possibly be one of the 4 if she had been a newborn in 1800. If the others were at the high end of the under-10 age, say 6, 8, and 10, they would be 16, 18, and 20, and could easily be married, or out working in some other household. And of course, one or more may have died. If one of those females was Sarah (Wilson) Mead, she was married to Selah Mead in 1803, very young. Based on this census, the head of household was born 1766 - 1784. Image 9 of 19 on Ancestry.com8 |
Research Note | Possible Family. Possible Family of Nehemiah Wilson and Rachel Avery: In 1790, they had been married 4 years. The census indicates possibly 2 daughters, although the 3rd female could be some other relative. 1800: The census indicates 5 new children, a boy and 4 girls. 1810: The census indicates an additional boy and additional girl. This could be Anna and Walter A. Summary: Possible family: Daughter 1: bet. 1786-1790 Son 1: bet. 1790 - 1800 Daughter 2: bet. 1790 - 1800 Daughter 3: bet. 1790 - 1800 Daughter 4: bet. 1790 - 1800 Daughter 5: bet. 1790 - 1800 Daughter 6: Anna, about 1803 Son 2: Walter A., about 1807-1810

Pensn App Revolution | 1 April 1818 | Nehemiah filed a Revolutionary War Pension Application on 1 April 1818 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as follows. His application was filed before Sam. W. Johnson, Esq., Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Fairfield County. He stated that "in the month of Feb'y AD 1777, he inlisted into the service of the United States in a Company commanded by Capt. Sam'l Hoyt, now dec'd, in a Regt. commanded by Col. Philip B. Bradley in the Connecticut line on the Continental establishment, for the term of three years and in the month of July AD 1780 was honorably discharged. That from the time of his said enlistment until the time of his said discharge he continued in said service engaged against the Common enemy. That from time and accident, his discharge is mislaid and lost. That he is in his sixty second year and that from his reduced circumstances in life he is in need of assistance from his country for support. Nehemiah "X" Willson's mark Solomon Close also swore on the same day that he is well acquainted with Nehemiah Willson and that he is now and for many years has be a resident citizen of the United States and Connecticut and that from his reduced circumstances in life he is in need of assistance from his country. for support. Isaac Smith also appeared on the same day, and swore that he knows that Nehemiah Willson enlisted into Col. Bradley's Regt for three years, and that he served out his time and was honorably discharged.10 |
Pension Proceedings | 3 June 1818 | Pension proceedings, related to the pension of Nehemiah Wilson, Jr., were carried out on 3 June 1818 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, as follows. Nehemiah Wilson, Private, Connecticut line, 1777, 3 years. Inscribed on the Roll of Connecticut at the rate of 8 Dollars per month to commence on the 1st of April 1818. Certificate of Pension issued the 3rd of June 1818 and sent to the Pensioner, care of Sam'l -- Johnson Esq, Stamford, Connecticut.10 |
Census | 1820 | He appeared in the census 1820 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Nehemiah is listed as: Nehemiah Wilson 1 male under 10 one male 26-44, one male 45 or older (Nehemiah) 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-25. The 26-44 male may be a married son with young children living with him. I speculate that this married son could be William Wilson. Therefore I am tentatively linking him to this census entry. Where is Nehemiah's wife in this census? This head of household, 45 or older, was born 1775 or before. Neighbors are Seely Mead, Thomas Mead, Wilson Merritt, Matthew Mead, Henry Santos, Jesse Felmittee, Alla or Alta Africa, John Ellis. We have a DNA match going back to a James Benjamin Wilson, b. 10 Oct 1818 in Fairfield County, CT. Perhaps this James Benjamin Wilson could be the under 10 son of the Nehemiah, Jr. Son here. However, Nehemiah seems to have had only two sons, William, the elder, and Walter A., the younger. I have tentatively identified this elder son of Nehemiah, William, as a boarding house landlord in New York, and in 1865, William lists a "child" James H. age 30, which would put the birth year at 1830. Oddly, there is no further information in the columns after this James H. 8 names above Nehemiah on the 1820 census is another "Nehem. Wilson" next to three Taylors (Nath'l, Daniel and Joseph) and Robert Peck. Nehem. has 1 male 10-16, one male 45 plus, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45 plus, one in Agriculture. This is a puzzle, because the Glenville Nehemiah Wilson died in 1814. Who is this one? I have entered him as Nehemiah 3rd in the database.11 |

Census | 1830 | He appeared in the census 1830 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Nehemiah is listed as: Nehemiah Wilson: 1 male under 5, (This may be Samuel A.) 1 male 20-29, If this is William, he would be 33. 1 male 70-79, 2 females 20-29, 1 female 60-69, 1 female 90 - 99. There are two Nehemiah's on the 1830 census in Greenwich, but neither of them are in the neighborhood where this Nehemiah had been living in previous censuses near the Second Congregational Church. It appears that Nehemiah may have relocated, and I haven't figured out yet what area of Greenwich this is. The neighbors in this 1830 entry are George L. Cornwall, David Lyon, Daniel Sherwood, Wm. Moreby or Morely, Joseph Brundage, Wm. Wilcox, Allen Strang, Daniel Taylor, Jr., Benjamin Peck, Joshua Reynolds.12 |

I do not see that anyone has applied for DAR under Nehemiah Wilson.10 |
