Research Note | We know from Nehemiah's wife's pension paperwork that they had a son named William who lived in New York City in 1853. I have found the most likely candidate, and entered his facts in this record. However, although this New York William Wilson fits well with what we know of Nehemiah's family, he may not be the William who was Nehemiah's son. Further research may provide additional evidence, or conflicting information. There is a family story about this family on Family Search, written in the 1940's by a descendant. https://www.familysearch.org/photos/gallery/album/69383 It does not say anything about the origins of William Wilson. But it does list the children, and does not list a son born before 1820. It does list a son Samuel A., b. 15 Dec 1829. | |
Birth | between 1795 and 1800 | William Wilson was born between 1795 and 1800 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Birth range of 1795-1800 based on Nehemiah Wilson's 1790-1820 censuses. The Findagrave record of the William Wilson who may be this same man, lists his birth date as 26 May 1797, in Greenwich, CT.1 |
Marriage | about 1817 | He and Deborah Ann Warren were married about 18172 |
Census | 1820 | He appeared in the household of Nehemiah Wilson, Jr., in the census 1820 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Nehemiah is listed as3 |
Census-not found | 1830 | William has not been found on the census of 1830 I have not found a census that seems to be William and family for 1830. It is possible he was still living with Nehemiah, but the people listed don't seem to match. |
Census-not found | 1840 | William has not been found on the census of 1840 I have not found a census for William and family for 1840. |
Residence | 1841 | As of 1841 William lived in New York His 1855 census says that he has lived in the city for 15 years. In 1848 and 1849, the New York directory lists a William Wilson at 124 Columbia, a butcher, which was his occupation in the 1850 census. There are many William Wilson's in every New York directory, but none that can be singled out by occupation or address as this one. |
Census | 1850 | He appeared in the census 1850 at Ward 10 in New York City, New York County, New York. William is listed as: William Wilson, age 49, Butcher, born in Connecticut Debra A, age 53, born in New York Mary, age 26, born in New York Catherine, age 22, born in New York Jane, age 21, born in New York Martha, age 16, born in New York George Smith (26, Carver, England) Emma C. Taylor (35, Agent, New York) James D. Osborn (40, Clerk, New York) Eliza Osborn (35, New York) Elizabeth Elsworth (18, New York) Platt Belden (45, Machinist, CT) Bogard Osborn (2) James Coopland (30, Plane Maker, New York) So although occupation is given as butcher, they also seem to be running the boarding house as listed in the 1855 NY state census. Neighbors: Martin Van Hovenbert (Lawyer), Raymond Graveland (druggist), Edward Mullen (Shoes), Henry Schmitt (Barber?), John Henry (Confectioner), John Heller (watchmaker), John Short (dyer) Image 230 of 558 |
Directory | 1851 | As of 1851 William was listed in the New York City, New York County, New York, directory at 303 Grand St., Ward 10. He is listed as running a boarding house. He is also listed at this address in 1852 and 1853.4 |
Residence | 1853 | As of 1853 William lived in New York City, New York County, New York,5 |
Power of Attorney | 3 February 1853 | William filed a Power of Attorney on 3 February 1853 in New York City, New York County, New York, as follows. William Wilson, of the City of New York and son and joint heir at law of Nehemiah Wilson, authorized D. S. Browne of New York, Attorney, to be his attorney for the purpose of obtaining information from the government pertaining to his father. The 1855 New York City directory lists David S. Browne, lawyer,at 37 Chambers, h. 87 E. 27th St. |
Directory | 1854 | As of 1854 William was listed in the New York City, New York County, New York, directory at 265 Broome St, Ward 10. He is listed as running a boarding house. He is also listed at this address in 1855, 1856, 1857.4 |
Census | 1855 | He appeared in the census 1855 at Ward 10, 2nd ED, in New York City, New York County, New York. William is listed as: Wm Wilson, 58, born in Connect., married, 15 years resident in this town, Runs a boarding house. Deborah A., 58, Wife, born in N.Y., 58 years resident in NYC Mary, age 32, born in NY, resident in NY 32 yrs Jane, age 23, born in NY, resident in NY 23 yrs Clarissa E, age 21, Born in Conn, resident in NY 1 yr Martha E, age 19, Born in Conn., resident in NY 15 yrs Also listed, a servant and 15 Boarders. This could possibly be the same William Wilson. However there are some confusing data items. Stevemorse.org says about the Second Election District: 2 ED: Bowery - Broome St - Orchard St - Hester St (If you want the intersection of Forsyth and Grand, it's in the 10th Ward. Try 2nd ED, bounded by Bowery, Broome, Orchard and Hester. Grand St. runs through 10th, 14th and 8th Wards, and is the boundary between 7th and 13th.) Forsyth St. runs from 10th into 17th Ward. |
Directory | 1858 | As of 1858 William was listed in the New York City, New York County, New York, directory at 71 Eldridge as boarding house landlord. #71 is between Hester and Grand, Ward 10. In the 1851 Doggets Directory, which is by address, it was a boarding house, operated by Eliza Ewing. This is within 2 blocks of the two previous addresses, and very likely is the same person. William and his boarding house are listed at this same address also in 1859, 1860, & 1861. From 1862 - 1864, I did not find an entry for William either in New York or in Brooklyn.6,7 |
Census | 1860 | He appeared in the census 1860 at Ward 10 in New York City, New York County, New York. William is listed as: William Wilson, age 55, Runs Boarding House, personal estate value $1000, born in Conn. Debora A. Wilson, age 62, born in New York Hippooly Wilson, age 26. From other sources, her name appears to be Hepzibah Jane. Also a servant from Ireland, and 4 Boarders: Lucius Clark, 20, Salesman, b. Mass. James Storer, 40, Porter, b. England William French, 31, Salesman, b. Conn. Martha French, 24, b. Conn. Mary Welch, 24, Servant, b. Ireland Image 124/185. There is a New York state 1865 census with some similarities, but many differences: 19th Ward, Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, p. 11 Wm Wilson, 68, b. Conn, 2 children ("of how many children the parent"), 1 marriage Deb Wilson, 68, wife, b. Conn, 2 children, 1 marriage James H. Wilson, 30, child, b. Occupation - Pictures. Owner of property.) Deb Wilson (age 68, wife, b. Conn. 2 children, married once) James H. Wilson (Child, age 30, b. New York. Not marked single or married. No occupation listed.) This looks like James, but I think this is Jane Hepzibah. Martha French (age 28, Child, b. New York, one child, married once) William B. French (age 34, Son-in-law, b. Conn., 1 child, married once, no occupation listed) Fred French (age 6, Grandson, b. Williamsburgh) Neighbors: Isaac J. Birth | 1835 | James H. Wilson was born in 1835 in New York. The only mention of this child is the 1865 census of Nehemiah Wilson, which does not list an occupation or marital status for James H. He is listed as male, child of the head of household. At this time Jane Hepzibah would be expected to still be living at home because she did not marry Robert Crane until about 1869. Therefore, it is possible that this is a mistake of the enumerator, perhaps misunderstanding Jane H. for James H. |
