Newspaper Item | 28 September 1877 | According to the 28 September 1877 edition of the Jamestown Daily Journal, Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York, ,Mr. Levant L. Mason has received from his brother in law Capt R. H. Pratt, of the 10 Cavalry, a magnificent buffalo robe, which measures ten feet in length and is six feet wide. The hair is thick and fine and resembles that of a beaver. The under side of the robe is painted with pictures of Indians on horseback, an Indian war dance, Mexicans in broad sombreros, riding mustang ponies and a host of other aboriginal devices. Capt. Pratt is located at Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Fla. and is in charge of a band of seventy five Indian prisoners, held there by the government. The robe he presented Mr. Mason was tanned and painted by the wife of White Horse, one of the chiefs confined there, and was sent him as a present and by him it was sold to Capt. Pratt. Mr. Mason has a large number of other Indian curiosities sent him by Captain Pratt, but the robe is by far the most valuable of all and is the best of its kind we have ever seen. The experiment of civilizing the Indians at Fort Marion is said to be successful to a greater degree than was expected, and they are fast losing the habits and tendencies of barbarian life. |

Daughter | Ida Pickard (b. 6 October 1851, d. 29 January 1934) |
Birth | 1821 | Benjamin S. Pickard was born in 1821 in Ohio. Or maybe 1825, based on death record from City Health Office, Delphi, stating his age in 1900 as 75. And maybe born in NY, based on 1870 census.1 |
Census-not found | 1850 | Benjamin has not been found on the census of 1850 He probably lived in Chautaqua County, NY because his future wife lived there, and by the following year, he had a daughter, Ida, who was born in Ellington. In 1850, there is a family of Pickards in Ellington: Abram (40, farmer), Sally A (25), John T. (17, farm laborer), Benjamin A (14), Andrew P (10) and Margaret Pickard (age 82). I would guess this could be Benjamin's brother or his uncle and his grandmother. The family next door is Henry Pickard (47, Carpenter & Joiner), Mariah (42), Adam W. (18, Carpenter & Joiner), Sylvenas A. (16, Farm laborer), Charles G. (14), Alonzo C (12), Mariah (9), Fanny (7), Ernest (5) and Abram L. (9/12). Again, Henry could be an uncle. Henry's father was evidently named John, born and raised in Madison County, NY. [from Biographical and portrait cyclopedia of Chautauqua County, New York (1891) writeup on Major Alonzo Pickard, the boy above).] John enlisted in the Continental army in the Revolution, was captured by Indians and taken to Canada, and later released. Came to Chautauqua Cty in 1816. Wife was Margaret Becket. They had 8 children (Charity, Marin, Henry b. 1803, Adam, James, John, Peter, Abram b.1810, d.1896) in the later 1700's and early 1800's). One of those sons could have been Benjamin Pickard's father. John (Johannes) b. May 28, 1760 and Maria Margaret (Garlock) Pickard (not Becket?), d. 30 Aug 1827 in Ellery. There are many links on Find-a-Grave for this very large family of Pickards, but I don't see this Benjamin. Since this is not a direct line, I am not searching further. |

They also had two handsome sons; Richard and David. They have eight grandchildren and seven great-grand children. During their married life of 68 plus years they traveled extensively, not only throughout the 50 states but also to Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, The Caribbean, South Sea Islands, France, Italy, Switzerland and Egypt. Effie was very interested in portrait painting and she was also active in singing in the church choir. Eugene and Effie started up a very successful welding equipment repair company serving the San Francisco bay area. They were known as the "The Best in the West" by their customers. After being married for 68 years it will be difficult for Eugene to imagine what life will be like without this wonderful, loving, cheerful, vivacious, inspirational, warm, green eyed, beautiful woman by his side and he looks forward to seeing her again in heaven and hearing her sing those wonderful hymns again. Effie was what you may call an evangelical born again Christian. For those who may not know what the term "a born again Christian means" it is a warm feeling of love to God and Christ to their teachings delivered to us through the Holy Ghost. It is not just living a good life or going to church every Sunday or saying our prayers every night. It is a feeling of warmth inside yourself that controls everything that you do and think and when it does this you will know that you will someday walk with all the souls that have gone on before you. Her happiest moments, outside of being with her family, was talking about Christianity, singing hymens and living to the best of her ability to do so. The photo above is Eugene and Effie McCallum enjoying their years of life together as always in their 1955 Ford Thunderbird. They said that they have one on order in heaven.
