Biography
Note | | |
Research Note | | Presbyterian baptism records exist for Gainsborough at the UK National Archives, RG4 4061A (1707 - 1749) RG4 2454 (1750-1809) RG4 2455 (1811-1817) RG4 2456 (1806-1836) From 1707 to 1720, baptisms are listed for 5 (possibly 6) Roebuck children. They were born with the normal spacing that would be expected for children of one family: Philip (Abt 1702) Joseph (say 1704) (Jonathan say 1708 ), Nathaniel 1710, Mary 1713, Ann 1715, Sarah 1718, Gervis 1721.
The Presbyterian record set (National Archives RG4 4061A) is only 8 images, and only covers baptisms. Additionally, this record set does not list the parents of the baptized child.
Until 1837, non-conformist churches could not legally marry couples. Therefore Philip and Hannah were married in the local Church of England, All Saints Church, and their marriage was recorded in the All Saints parish register.
The records that allow us to connect these Roebuck children to parents Philip and Hannah are the death/burial records, which also are recorded in the All Saints Burial listings. The burials for Mary, Ann, Joseph and Sarah, list their parents as Philip Roebuck and Hannah.
Further evidence that Philip and Hannah are the parents of these children listed in the Non-conformist records is the fact that no Roebuck children baptisms are listed in the Gainsborough Church of England records. In fact, in a search for baptisms in Lincolnshire for this timeframe, only one other Roebuck was baptized in the southwest of the county, son of a John Roebuck, schoolmaster. There were Roebuck baptisms in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, and the closest are several children of Richard Roebuck and Anne Dickinson in Misterton, Notts, Elizabeth 1703, Anne 1706, Richard 1708, and then Anne the wife of Richard died in 1710. They were baptized Church of England, and their parents' names were listed.
Therefore, both positive and negative evidence support the theory that Philip and Hannah were the parents of this family of children. |
Family Note | | Place: Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England, In 1666 there was a baptism at All Saints for Robert, son of Robert. In 1674 there was a baptism at All Saints for Richard, son of Robert. |

Jonathan Roebuck
M, #11219, b. 1708
Parents
Biography
Birth | 1708 | Jonathan Roebuck was (possibly) born in 1708 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. I do not know that Jonathan is the son of Philip and Hannah, or that he was born in 1708. He married in Lea in 1730, 4 years before Nathaniel. The proximity and timing suggest that he is very likely a son of Philip and Hannah born between their marriage in 1701 and the first readable Presbyterian register.
It is possible that Philip and Hannah had Jonathan in 1708, an unreadable baptism in the Presbyterian records seems to be for Roebuck, and his marriage is recorded in Lea.1 |
