Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Charles Tilley of Tilley avenue, who celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last Monday, were married here March 24, 1881, by the Rev. Comfort E. Barrows, pastor of the First Baptist Church. On their diamond wedding anniversary, they received numerous congratulations. Mrs. Tilley cut a wedding cake made of candy and decorated with a bridal couple in full dress.
Mrs. Tilley, the former Miss Nevada Brown, was born in Siskiyou County, Nevada, March 7, 1860, a daughter of Joshua Coggeshall Brown and Mrs. Jane Elizabeth (Smith) Brown, the latter a daughter of Captain William Smith of Middletown. When a small girl she sailed from California to Newport around Cape Horn with her mother and other children of the family.
She is a direct descendant of John Coggeshall, the first president of the Rhode Island Colony, and of Nicholas Brown, who settled in Acquidneck (now Portsmouth) in 1638 and was one of the original signers of the compact of that year.
Mr. Tilley is the son of Abraham Henry Tilley, who was a grandson of Deacon William Tilley and Elizabeth (Rogers) Tilley, whose portraits are hanging on the walls of the Newport Historical Society, and Celinda (Barker) Tilley. Mr. Tilley is a direct descendant of Roger Williams, John Coggeshall, Nicholas Easton, Benedict Arnold, and John and Samuel Cranston, all of whom were early governors of Rhode Island. Early in life, Mr. Tilley learned the carpenter trade, engaged in the building business and before his retirement was treasurer of the Newport Hygenic Ice and Water Company for several years.

I., Hygienic Ice and Water Co., died Thursday at the home of his son, Milton P. Tilley, on Bald Hill Rd. He was 83 years old. He is survived by his widow, Nevada Brown Tilley, and by three sons and a daughter."
His son Milton, wrote a more extensive obituary, which was probably published in other papers:
"Several Years Resident of Port Chester, New York
Born September 27, 1860 at Newport, Rhode Island.
Scion of one of Newport's oldest families and a direct descendant of Roger Williams, John Coggeshall, the first President of the Rhode Island Colony and of Governors Benedict Arnold, Nicholas Easton, John and Samuel Cranston, all of Rhode Island.
He married on March 24th, 1881 at Newport, Rhode Island, Nevada Brown, Daughter of Joshua Coggeshall Brown and Jane E. (Smith) Brown. The Brown family is also one of Newport's oldest and best, having as its progenitor, Nicholas Brown who settled in Portsmouth in 1638.
He was a son of Abraham Henry Tilley and Celinda (Barker) Tilley, grandson of Abraham Dennis Tilley, and great-grandson of Deacon William Tilley, all of Newport, Rhode Island.
He had been residing during the latter years of his life at No. 1 Tilley Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island. He was for a number of years treasurer of the Newport Hygienic Ice and Water Co., but has not been active in business in recent years on account of advanced age."
This obituary reflects his son Milton's deep interest in the study of his ancestry, but the Stamford Advocate opted to omit all the facts of most interest to Milton! |
