Biography | 1880 | In 1880: George W. Hill, in his History of Ashland County, included a short bio of John P. Smalley: " John P. Smalley is the youngest son of John and Elizabeth (Bradfield) Smalley, and was born on the place where he now resides, June 28, 1823. His father was a native of New Jersey, and his mother was a Virginian by birth. The father was a soldier of the war of 1812, and endured many of the hardships that were common to the lot of the soldiers of that war. He was married in Jefferson county, Ohio, in the year 1807. He was born in the year 1777. He was one of the early settlers of Ashland county, then Wayne county, coming here was early as the year 1819, when the beautiful fields we now see in Perry township were covered with a dense wilderness. His experience was similar, and his hardships the same, as those endured by the pioneers of that early day, graphic accounts of which we read elsewhere in this volume. John P., the subject of this sketch, lived with his parents until his marriage to Sarah A. Davis, a native of Delaware county, New York. This event took place December 23, 1847. To them have been born eleven children, eight of whom are living: John A., Matthew R., Lindsley H., Frank E., and Charles A.; McClellan, who died in early childhood; Sarah E., who died in childhood; Anna M., Harriet E., Lottie and Sanidda, died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Smalley have been earnest, consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church for the past twenty years -- that branch of the Christian religion best exemplyfying their beliefs. He has been recording steward for the last nine years. He has served his county tow terms as county commissioner, and was a careful and faithful officer. Mr. Smalley has, by dint of hard work and careful management, accumulated a fine property. Commencing in poverty, he is now surrounded by a nice family of children and has one of the pleasantest homes in the township. Mr. Smalley is one of Ashla d county's most highly respected citizens. He is noted for his careful habits and good judgment in all matters of a public or business nature. He is spoken of by his neighbors and citizens as one of Perry township's substantial farmers, and is well regarded by all who know him. He has held the office of township clerk nine years in succession, and was land appraiser as far back as 1860. He held this position in 1870 and also assisted in 1880. He has never aspired to official position, but has been sought out by his fellow citizens, and the office has ever sought the man." [Note: The village originally laid out as Lafayette is called Red Haw today. Ashland County was part of Wayne County until 1846.]1 |

Birth | about 1745 | Isaac Smalley was born about 1745 in New Jersey. Some trees show his father as Joshua and Margaret Burgess. Joshua certainly had a son Isaac, who inherited his land. Maybe land records would help. FamilySearch tree shows the Isaac who married Priscilla Scott as the son of Joshua. I have that Isaac and Priscilla Scott as son of Isaac and Cietje. Needs clarification. |

See attached summary of the Pittenger family, from the book "The Harvey Book: Giving the Genealogies of Certain Branches of the American Families of Harvey, Nesbitt, Dixon and Jameson and Notes on Many Other Families" by Oscar Jewell Harvey, published by E. B. Yordy & Co., 1899. This summary is a footnote, related to a marriage of a George Urquhart, who married Sarah Pittenger, daughter of John Pittenger. Urquhart is one of the lines she traces in her book, and the Pittengers, having married into that line, are treated in a long footnote starting on page 852. The book is online at books.google.com.
Research Note | Smalley - Smith - Pittenger connection s. Tress Pittenger Jr in his Pittenger book, writes the following: "IA2g Cietje/Sophia Pittenger Smalley 1742 Several of the genealogies show this last child of Hendrick and Maria Louw born about 1742 in Harlingen and married to Isaac Smalley without any other information. As this family does not figure in my attempting to clarify some of the confusion and contradictions in the data on the Pittengers in New Jersey before 1800, I will not develop it further. Pippenger says Isaac was the son of John Smalley, and he and Sophia had Hendrick who was baptized 17 May 1767, at the Neshanic DRC; possibly Richard who was born about 1768 and married Catherine Emmons (was she a sister of Anchor Emmons who married Richard Pittenger, son of Jacob and Charity Hagerman?); Isaac baptized 6 October 1771, in the Neshanic Church; Abraham baptized 29 May 1774, at Nashanic, and John who married Elizabeth Bradfield. D. F. Sattler of Woodville, Ohio, has prepared a diagram of the intermarriages of the Smalleys, Smiths and Pittengers. It is quite complicated as four of the children of Henry Pittenger (Sophia's nephew) and Polly Barcus, married four children of Alexander and Ann Smith in Ohio, and some of their children married Smalley cousins." p. 85. [Note, HK, 25 May, 2022: I think D. F. Sattler may be Donald F. Sattler, 6 Aug 1910 - 14 Apr 1991, of Woodville, who was a son of Ross and Fern (Smalley) Sattler. Since his mother was a Smalley, he would be likely to go into that genealogy. Emailed Mike O'Connor, Woodville Hist. Soc., m.k.o@embarqmail.com. I don't see that I ever got an answer. He is on kdrollin public member tree on ancestry. The other item that stands out to me in this paragraph is the mention of Polly Barcus. So similar to Seth Pratt's middle name of Bacchus. Probably just coincidence. She seems to be buried as Mary Pittenger, d. 1845, in Lucas Cemetery, Lattasburg.]1
