NoteFamilySearch family tree has a detailed tree of this family, and who they married.
Birth1768Richard Smalley was born in 1768 in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Marriage1792He and Catharine Emmons were married in 1792 in Princeton, Mercer County, NJ, Thirteen children were listed in Richard's will in 1845.

The marriage date and location is taken from a number of trees on the Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch. These trees say Catherine's parents were Hendrick Emmons and Sarah Bergen, and carry those lines back to very early New York Dutch and in one case to the Brabant. These trees may or may not be accurate, but have no sourcing.1

Relocationabout 1813About 1813, Richard Smalley moved to Perry Township, Ashland County, Ohio. p. 66: "We learn, from pioneer tradition, that in 1813, 1814, 1815, the following new settlers arrived ..." and the book lists various Ohio locations and their early settlers. On page 67: "In Perry, Hugh Carr, Cornelius Dorland, Thomas Johnson, Joseph Chandler, Arthur Campbello, John Raver, Richard Smalley, Henry Worst and John Pittinger, with their families."1
Residence1814As of 1814 Richard lived in Ashland County, Ohio, based on Hill's "History of Ashland County, Ohio" (which was still Wayne County at this time), "The pioneers of Perry at that time (1814), are believed to have been John Carr, John Ewing, Joseph Chandler, Aaron Cory, John Cory, John Raver, Benjamin Emmons, James Scott, Richard Smalley, Henry Worst, Arthur Campbell, Cornelius Dorland, and John Jackson, who was the first justice of the peace."

Richard's property as purchased from the federal government was 022N 015W, the NW 1/4 of Section 4. See attached.

Based on census records and land records and county histories, Ashland County, Ohio, pioneers included:
Richard Smalley
John Smalley
Henry Smalley (2)
Isaac Smalley
Peter Pittenger
Daniel Pittenger
John Pittenger (2)2
Census1820He appeared in the census 1820 in Perry Township, Ashland County, Ohio. Richard is listed as: Richard Smawley
4 males under 10 (Abraham)
2 males 10-16 (Isaac, Richard)
1 male 16-18 ?

1 male 45 and up

1 female under 10 (Catherine)
1 female 16-26 (Sophia, possibly married to Armstrong at this time?)

Possible that Sophia is married to John Armstrong and living with them, with 4 youngsters. However there is a young John Armstrong in Salt Creek Township, yound wife and a little girl.

Neighbors, Anderson, Buchanon, Smith, Strouse, Blew, Baker, Cornel, Harpster.
Residence1825As of 1825 Richard lived in Perry Township, Ashland County, Ohio, Hill, in his History of Ashland County, lists all the voters of various townships as of 1825. Biography

NoteHer surname may have been Emmond.
Birth22 June 1777Catharine Emmons was born on 22 June 1777 in Virginia. The SAR Application of Robert S. Smalley, descended from the Revolutionary War soldier Samuel Emmons, Sr., of Boston, Mass., gives Catherine's birthdate as 6/22/1788, and died Feb 1820. This application also give very different dates of birth and death for her husband Richard than are on Findagrave for their burials in Lucas Cemetery.
Marriage1792Richard Smalley and she were married in 1792 in Princeton, Mercer County, NJ, Thirteen children were listed in Richard's will in 1845.

Biography1880In 1880: George Hill, in his History of Ashland County, includes a short bio of Richard Smalley:

"Richard Smalley was the eighth child and fifth son of Richard and Catharine (Emmond) Smalley. The father was a native of New Jersey, and the mother of Virginia. Their first settlement in Ohio was in Jefferson county, where our subject was born. They moved into Ashland county about the year 1820, and settled on the farm which is still in the possession of their son, Richard. A half-section of land was his first purchase, on which he built a log cabin and commenced his pioneer life in earnest. At this time, the now beautiful fields of Perry township were a dense wilderness and it took courage and a brave heart to face the hardships they had to undergo.

Our subject left home before reaching his majority, and worked as a farm hand for Captain Andrews, of Ashland, continuing at this ten or fifteen years. Then he bought a farm of one hundred and sixty acres, near Olivesburgh. After making several purchases of land, and as often changing his residence, he was married to Ardilla Vantilburg, of this county, in the year 1840. To them have been born nine children, five of whom are living. Their names are as follows: Henry C., who was a soldier in the hundred-day service; John W., who was a brave soldier, and died in St. Louis in the service of his country, and now lies buried in his native county; Daniel, who was a soldier, and was killed at Athens, his remains now lying somewhere in the "sunny south," in an unknown, but not forgotten, grave, his body never having been found; Richard V.; Jacob, who died in infancy; Silas W.; Dr. Benjamin F.; one, an infant, unnamed; and William E. Two only live at home -- William and Silas. Although not members of any church organization, Mr. and Mrs. Smalley are peace-loving and law-abiding citizens. By dint of hard work, industry, and a wise economy, Mr. Smalley has risen from a poor man to be one of the thriftiest and most substantial farmers of Perry township. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smalley come from old pioneer stock, and to them posterity will look with mingled pleasure and pride for the results they have achieved.1
